I kept my distance and pelted him with meteorstrike. If he came too near I ran away to a safe distance and repeated. Worked near the grave and in his home, too.
Maybe with bow and arrows for you? Kiya
Forgot: I killed him 2x before going into the catacombs, so I had 2 level ups

A bow is effective, especially since he's so slow. I also wait until I've completed the catacombs before I go up against him (just so I have enough levels).

i tried meteorstrike before but im usually too paralyzed to run...haha this is stupid also when you run, right, he doesn't appear on yr map until he's close, and that's too close for comfort...
and he freaks me out. that what-'s-his-name in the catacombs too. when you run ahead and he suddenly appears, you tend to attack him by instinct (not you then me anyway) but of cos, you cant
btw what do you recommend a mage learns right at the beginning?
and thanks GoldyLocks

I killed Jake with a level 1 survivor using a bow, on the hard difficulty setting. It took a lot of running, a quick save after every few successful hits without dying, and a couple quick loads. That jumped me up to level 3, IIRC, and killing him in his cellar brought me up to 4.

it doesnt really matter if you do the catacombs before fighting him does it? cos im on the level before the last level and everything's so easy!!! well, except the horrid spider under one of them floortiles (any help?)

Hm, Lighte, if Jake came too close, I hit the pause button, calmed down (when I was freaked out) and then searched for the direction where I was save to flee to. Mage spells: Meteor strike is fine, helps against all skeletons in the catacombs, they flare up nicely. and I learned freeze quickly (to kill the knight Seth/Serk and have a look at his blade ) BTW, freeze holds Jake down nicely and then you can scorch a silent statue Important was alchemy lvl 1 for me/survivor path , so I could mix red+blue potions to white (restoration). Mage needs mana and these potions are very effective. [color:"yellow"]Kaan's magic guide, click here[/color] Spider: Meteorstrike again and using the pause button if my health was low - drank a restoration (white) potion and flared away again. Just a tip: If you're in the last level, be sure to have a lot of white potions with you, so you can kill all monsters there, you get a lot of XP. I had to do this end fight several times, why? Because I didn't hoard enough potions and didn't want to miss one little XP pt Kiya - greedy Jake: Nope, it's up to you at what time you kill Jake, as long as... hm, that would spoil. As long as you stay in Aleroth, you're free to kill him

i've got a lvl one freeze. the 3 time units , do they refer to 3 seconds?
and i got lvl one alchemy too cos i read somewhere that restortion potions restore mana and health by percentage instead of points
also is identify creature in the survivor path useful?
im really stingy with my potions too and i totally cant bear to use them
one time i killed that bloody skeleton lord, and later i found out, to my dismay ( after i had saved cos i was relieved) that i, sorry, that idiot walking corpse had killed it instead of meeeeee.... and i saved.... *greedy too, i*

Sorry, don't know the RL time unit, but if I watched closely, I saw the enemy thawing up, hit the pause button, chose freeze again, froze, paused at once again - so not to waste precious time, ran away if the enemy was too close and then used meteorstrike again (used this for the knight, he's tough and fast).
IIRC I used about 6-10 freeze to kill the knight Seth/Serk
Yes, I like identify creature: At lvl 5 I saw resistances and could use my spells efficiently. In my later games I didn't use it, because I had already made a list about my favourite attacks/creatures, so I could use these 5 skill pts somewhere else.
Tsktsk, greedy, too, hm? Well, I guess, you'll be corrupted by this forum as quickly as I was also then (ye know, playing the goodygoody and then seeing evil tips and wanting to try them out )

If you haven't completely finished that level (ie. Saved Mardeneus' sanity), then there's a lot more experience available for you. As for the spider, try freeeze or come back later, he really is tough to kill.

You're correct, the spell is know creature - I'd recommend learning it. My avatar is Viconia from Baldur's Gate - and Hellfighter here on the forum modified her in my favourite colours. He has this as hobbies/interests in his profile: RPGs, computer, programing, casemodding, creating avatars Kiya
If you refer to HEF's avatar: It's his own rune, and he creates them for interested gamers also. His rune is my favourite, very elegant.
As soon as you meet Mardaneus after restoring his sanity: ALL monsters are dead = no XP for them then <from one greedy to the other >

telekinesis is for retrieving stuff whichare inaccessible. for example, gems in a pit can't be picked up but using telekinesis u can. another example, looking through bars, u can switch/toggle switches on the other side.
frost weapons? it'll come soon enough...

Mage spell books can be bought (after you leave Aleroth), which is how I maxed Telekinesis and a couple other skills. Free skills, and spell books you can buy (SPOILERS)

Telekinesis: Is handy for the sewers later on to get goodies, you can open levers out of reach or pick up items that fell between the walls - not necessary at your stage of the game IMO.
Lighte, I'd do this: After you leave Aleroth and explore the rest of the maps, trade with every one and have a look if they sell spell books. I bought every book I could lay my greedy hands on, except those where I was lvl 5 already. As a tip from me: Never max out your spells with skill pts, it's better to buy them, but you have to be patient.
Frost weapon: Sorry, there's no fix place for this - errhm, but the knight's blade could have it, it was pretty powerful in some of my games. And in Ars Magicana (too far for you away at the moment) is a mage shop with a nice dagger in the back room in a chest - but you have only ONE chance to get it. Don't want to spoil. Kiya
