DOS used to work in beta and after release on my nice laptop but the latest two updates crash the game to desktop on start-up. All I get now is a black screen with the cursor and intermittent bits of sound until the CTD. I emptied the DOS content in the Steam and Documents folder before re-installing. No luck.

Do I have to force some kind of 64-bit installation?

Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

PS: Same results when running EoCApp.exe as admin with antivirus off.

Is there a configuration file written to the My Documents D:OS folder? If so you could try manually set a lower resolution or try windowed or fake fullscreen. If not, you can download a replacement. See the topic:
