Windows 98, SP2,
P3 550mhz
383RAM
32 Meg Geoforce 2 card
Nothing running in the background
Size of swap file regulated by OS
Game version and patch clean install 1.029 + 1.034
hard drive, free space left 900meg
DirectX version 9.0
colour depth 16 bit
additionals: have you used a fix download before (Raze's zip files eg.), used the hex editor, No-CD-Crack, Zakaron's game editor etc?
None of these used

I've been playing for two days now, day 1 played all evening, (&most of the night!) no problems at all.

I installed the 1.034 patch yesterday and started to experience game freezes randomly, 1st time was in my battle with Jake in the graveyard, froze mid fight had to reeboot my PC.

2nd time was speaking to George buying and selling equipment.

3rd time just walking along it froze.

Could this be something to do with the patch?. Any ideas welcome.
Can I just patch it back to 1.033, would this help?.

Hi,

Do you have the latest drivers installed? If not, please do this.
It might be, that you need more hard disc space too.

Could you please check these out?

Keep the game patched with version 1.034.

I have quite a similar configuration (apart from a GeForce and not a Geoforce <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> ) , and I didn't have any problems.

Well and I didn't have Direcx 9 at that time.

You could try to put more wave - buffers to the driver responsible for playing wave-sound-files.

If you have a sound-card, of course. (You didn't mention one.)

And you could try to reduce parameters in the GeForce driver, by the way, which version number has your GeForce driver ?

As a summary, I have the feeling as if this has something to do with sound, which is often very resource-hungry in terms of direct hardware access.

But I can't say since you haven't mentioned a soundcard yet ...

Last : Try to reduce the details from within the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> Menu ...

P.S.: Windows 98 had a Service Pack ? ... Didn't know that ...

There have been problems with DirecX9. You could go back to DX8.
This could help in your situation!

Good luck! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, but "going back" is quite difficult I guess. I still don't know how ...

or it may be as simple as running the config tool again
to re-set the settings.....since updating the patch.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

in regards to DirectX 9 .....this , straight from the FAQ..
Quote
DirectX 9.0 is a system component and cannot be uninstalled. If there is a problem with the DirectX installation, it can normally be resolved by shutting down all running applications and reinstalling. As mentioned previously, DirectX 9.0 is fully backward-compatible with titles written for previous versions of DirectX. If you are having other problems after installing DirectX 9.0, these can often be resolved by installing updated drivers for your display card, audio card, or input device.

As with most software, users of Windows ME and Windows XP have the option of creating a "System Restore point" before installing. System Restore points allow you to roll back your operating system to a time before the software was installed. If you feel there are special circumstances which may necessitate removal of DirectX. It is recommended that you create a System Restore point. Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, and Windows 2000 do not support the "System Restore" feature.

I downloaded the most recent video driver from Nvidia (451.23). Dowloaded and re-installed DirectX 9.0b. I also took down my sound acceleration a notch. (I do have a sound card, it's an integrated Sound Max card).

Since then it seems to have worked fine, thanks for your help folks!.
