What good are they? What can you do with them? Supposedly you can mix things but
what things and how do you do it (drag the item and drop it on the empty flask)?
What about all the rubies and emeralds? I just sell them but do they have any
other use?

Sell the gems and if you have the alchemy skill lvl 2 at least for minor flasks, you can drag them over highlighted mushrooms, herbs, poison barrels etc to get a potion. Lvl 3 in this skill allows the same for normal sized ones and lvl 4 for super flasks. Just take care to stand near enough, the mushrooms/herbs etc have to be highlighted in grey.

personally, i found alchemist skill to be a waste of time. you can buy potions almost everywhere in the game. and as easy as gold is to come by, why not just buy it and save some time. dont waste skill points on alchemey.

Ah, at least alchemy skill lvl 1 is important IMO, so you can mix potions: The white ones (restorations) are far better than red/blue. And depending on the game style you might need them a lot <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> - but you're correct, you can gain one skill lvl as reward for a quest. The prob is: you have to reach the Dark Forest first for that.

So with my skill level one in Alchemy I can make minor Restorations?

You can also fill your empty flasks with poison when you find some in barrels, then sell the poison and make money.

well, no.... but you can mix the small red and blue potions -- one of each, just drag and drop one on top of the other -- to make white (restoration) potions.
