When starting out I used to make beer runs to Rimmer in the dwarven village for extra cash ... this in turn filled up my dialog box immensly ... which later on in the game got a bit frustrating so I tried to see if there was some way i could edit this info out ... so i went to a backup save game file and tried to "fix " my problem with a file called dialog.000 . All I managed was to set it up so that my PC now read every .000 file with notepad ... which is not affecting game yet .I was wondering if anyone knows how I could reset this . stupid mistake and really not your problem i know ... still would appreciate the help

In Windows Explorer, select View | Folder Options, and click on the 'File Types' tab. Find the entry for .000 files in the list (they are sorted alphabetically by file type descriptions), and either edit it (if they were previously associated with something else) or delete it. Windows XP may have moved these options around, but it should still be similar.
BTW, this wouldn't effect the game at all, since it creates/edits files directly.

I take it you are relatively near the start of the game, if you are short on money?
You can backup your dialog.000 file when talking to Rimmer and restore it afterwards, to prevent further bloating. If there is a safe way to clear out extra entries already in the dialog file, you would probably have to use a hex editor.

If you don't mind cheating, there is a much easier method to get gold (or any item which can be stacked);
Drag a stack out of (or into) your inventory (or container) and hold down the control key before dropping. This will bring up the split stack pane; type in a negative number and hit enter (the checkmark will be greyed out). This can also be done in the trade window.
