I'm a relatively new player and was wondering if there was a way to kill friendlys, e.g. guards, without losing reputation.
I have done it once by accident but cant remember how.
Some of them drop some really sweet items.
e.g. cat statuette
Anyone have any ideas what this can be used for other than fun?

You dont have to spend all your skill points But you should spend SOME!

Only stuff you can kill without risk to reputation is red.
You can use those to sneak around.
A spider statue should (never tried it my self so try at your own risk) allow you safe passage through the dark forest.

It keeps people from calling the guards if you steal from them. Killing civvies is difficult because they run, but you can pretty easily do it with either a spider statuette or Poison Cloud. As a spider, you can simply walk up and bite them (you can even transform right back into your human self right in front of them, and they'll never figure it out), and Poison Cloud lets you gas a clump of civvies. As soon as you poison somebody, they start hiccuping and running around, so it may take a while to actually kill them like this.

Frankly, though, your average guard and civilian aren't worth killing. They never drop that much, and only if they have a cat statue for sale are they likely to drop one. The only people worth doing this to are shopkeepers, and then only to run them out of the room. The blacksmith in Ars Magicana is a good one to bite, and Gero, the armorer in Ars Magicana, comes back quickly as soon as you bite him, so bite, rob a little bit, but keep an eye on the radar for when he's coming back, then bite him again.

If you absolutely must clean out a town, get a Giant Heavy Orc to follow you from the orc territory to the southeast. Those things can kill anything. I always lure one into the Town Guard HQ.

You will rue the day you opposed me! Begin your rueing! I'll just... sit over here... and watch.

Ok thanks.
Then it must have been a bug but for some reason two guards attacked me and I killed them in self defense thus no reputation decrease.

If you use the spell 'poison cloud' you can kill anybody and anything you please, with no loss of reputation. The trick is to cast it near the 'friendly', because you can't actually target them directly because they're not hostile. I use this to clear out the citizens and guards in the Merchants area and in Verdistis. In fact, I use it to kill anybody who keeps getting in my way and bugging me. It's also a handy way to prevent yourself getting into trouble when stealing stuff. Just kill off everybody in the area where you want to loot, so that you won't be caught!
A word of warning though! Don't kill anybody who is central to the story, like Mardaneus and Goemoe for instance. And it might not be a real good idea to murder the merchants either, you've got to have somebody to trade with after all.

Hope you have fun.

Don't mind me.......I'm not really here!
