greetings.
somehow i must have missed it, but obviously you (we/i) are allowed to 'name' your character. i didn't do this.
is there a way to edit the character name without starting over?
thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum Lego!

Unfortunately, there is no way to edit your character's name that I know of.

Maybe it's best to contact Raze or Kiya (kiya has her own divinity site and Raze knows lots about files and editing) (And they are better at divine divinity than me)

If you use a hex editor, such as Hackman or HHD HexEditor, you can replace 'Hero' in the quickinfo.000 file in the saved game folder with a different 4 character name. I tried adding extra characters, but that just caused Divinity to crash. The value in the file which tells Divinity the length of the name was not immediately obvious, but with a little trial and error could likely be determined.

PS make a copy of the saved game folder first, before editing. It couldn't hurt to also make a backup of the quickinfo.000 file in the new folder, just in case.

I just checked out HHD HexEditor; the install program does not allow you to choose the install path, and the program has a smallish static banner for one of their other products always displayed, not shown in the screenshot on their web site.

In either hex editor, you can click on the ASCII side (right) of the screen, and just type in the new name over the current characters.

How do we know you are not a big disco fan, and started off with a character named Abba?

raze and kiya (and themightyone for the direction) -
i can't thank you two enough. your efforts are greatly appreciated.
the HHD hex did the trick, complete with longer (than 4 letters) name.
quite pleasing.
would have attached screenie, but not sure that is allowed in this forum.
in any case, i've nearly finished the game and will soon post my thoughts, a couple of which might just be helpful to new(er) players.
again, thanks you guys!

"complete with longer (than 4 letters) name."

In my save, after 'Raze' was ' ceToHit ... MaceRecuperationTime', so I just assumed the name length was variable, and inserted bytes to try to increase the character name. However, that is not the case; after the initial '00 00 00 00', the next 22 characters or so can be overwritten (from the character selection screen you can only use 22 characters in the name, but I was able to hex edit 24 without apparent problems).
