Is there really any point in spending the 30,000 to buy a house in Verdistis? Every time I talk to Trevor of the merchants guild, he gives the speech option to buy or rent a house. Do I need to buy it to trigger more quests or is it just an option

You have to solve Maria's quest first in order to buy the house...she vouces for you that you are a good enough person.
The house is good if you have stuff you want to put in it (armor ect) and it will not disapppear.
But, you could always use the Cursed Abbey to put your things too, and i have heard that things do not disappear from there.

not only that what was said above but you can for instance leave one pyramid on the cross road between the house and the Teleportal, so that way you can get your sleep and are able to use the teleportal to travel to other places.
Granted you can do the same with the teleporter in aleroth and sleep in your first digs but hey .. having a house to store stuff, sleep, and decorate if you want, just pyramid hop into the castle after Janus has left, and grab the food wine bottles nice plates plants etc, if you are that way inclined ofcourse

I see the house as paying for experience points. Ultimately, it's your call. It has little significance in the story.
