DAD's Item editor, DDIE 1.3/1.4 (see below)
How about this for a description?
DAD's Item editor, Version 1.4 (executable only) / Version 1.3 (with install program) - [July, 2003]
This item editor, created by DAD, is for changing or adding item attributes. Characteristics which can be edited include the item's name (text and colour it is displayed in), number of charm slots, armour, damage, weapon speed, durability, passive skills such as Deathblow or Life Drain, primary stats (strength, agility, intelligence, constitution) or vitality, mana, sight, hearing, offense, defense and resistance bonuses.
[color:"yellow"]Disclaimer: With the demise of DAD's site, he asked for volunteers to host his editor so it would continue to be available. Since I, Kiya, am not the creator (obviously) and have not personally used this editor, please do not e-mail me for help or support. Use this editor at your own risk! If you encounter problems, search for information on the Larian Forum, or post your problem / question there.
[color:"yellow"]Warning: With any save or item editor that modifies game data, it is strongly advised that you make an extra save before using it, or make a copy of the saved game folder. DAD's item editor has a button to backup the current items.000 file, however, an additional save would give you an easy way to revert to the original configuration (if, for example, you made several changes, played for a bit and decided the extra equipment bonuses made the game boring) and protect against forgetting to make a backup within the program.
To install DAD's item editor, you will likely need to download version 1.3, which contains the additional support files that your system may not already have. If you have previously installed and run the program, you should only need to download the executable for version 1.4.
<download DDIE, Version 1.4> (120 kb)
This is the executable file only of the latest (and most likely last) version. If you receive any errors about missing dll or ocx files, download and install version 1.3, then (optionally) replace that DDIE.exe file with the 1.4 version.
Changes from version 1.3
- the main program and edit window now require 1024x768 resolution, rather than 80x600 as with the previous version
- the GUI is more relaxed and user friendly, with some minor extra features
- the length of supported item names was increased from 40 to 80 characters
- fixed a minor bug which could cause miss-categorizing a couple of melee axes as head armour
<download DDIE, Versions 1.3> (full install, 2.38 MB)
After downloading, double click on the DDIE_ZIPPED.exe file to extract the program and setup files. By default the files will be extracted into the current folder, but you can specify a new folder (for easier cleanup of these temporary files when you are done installing). Next, double click the setup program in that folder.
Using the item editor;
When you run the program, you need to open the file named "items.000" in the save game folder you wish to modify (each save is a subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames' folder where you installed the game). Initially you will have to browse to the saved game folder, but after that the program will remember the last accessed folder.
Also, while in the game you should make a note of the name of any items you wish to edit (and maybe some of the stats, to tell the difference between similarly named items).
It is possible to save the game in Divinity then Alt-Tab out to run the editor, though some systems can either be slow doing this with games or become unstable. If you encounter problems, or have in the past, save and exit Divinity first. Then run the save editor (backup before editing, click on the cancel button in the edit window if you do not want to make any changes) and exit, then re-start Divinity (or switch back to it) and load the save you just edited for the changes to take effect.
