ok, I haven't seen any posts about this, and its driving me insane...I have a radeon 9600 and whenever I test the Direct3D mode, it will give me a black screen and just hang there until I close it via ctrl-alt-del or alt-tab. Well, I found a solution to this in simply skipping the test. Here's the problem, whenever I start the game, the colors are all funky, almost as if they were inverted or something. Does anyone know why its doing this and/or how I can fix it?

Did you install the patch? The problem with some Radeon cards and the configuration test is known, but as you found the game itself works fine.

Did you shut down all non-essential programs before installing the game? Did you try re-installing it?
Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure)

It's not the same graphics card, but from FIX for splotch problem/weird color areas/fog

Dear everybody

If you have the Windows ME/Nvidia graphics card "splotch problem," which makes bizarre splotches of darkness and color appear indoors and at night, here's the best cure:

Turn on your PC and leave it on for 45 minutes.

That's it. Better even than putting "splotchproblem 1" in your config.lcl.

You can check your e-mail or whatever you want. Just make sure about 45 minutes goes by.

I read this suggestion on the previous forum and wanted to share it. It saved me a lot of headaches.

best wishes for gaming fun, y'all

If you add the line to the end of your config.lcl file (make sure you hit Enter afterwards; the game expects the last line to be blank, and ignores it), that may clear up your colour problems as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither adding the line to the end of the config file or applying the patch seemed to do anything. I've been reading back posts and stuff and it seems to me that some other people HAVE had this problem and posted about it. I've tried everything - turning the colors down to 16 bit, reinstalling the game, etc. - and nothing has worked.

Another little FYI: the videos and logo screens at the beginning have the correct colors

Did you try the Software or Direct Draw video modes, to see if that made any difference?

I have an ATI too and have the same problem with direct 3d, to my knowelge you only have 3 options.

1 - direct draw works fine.

2 - install the drivers windows xp have by default for the ATI.

3 - skip the test.

if any of you have other option please let me know.

IIRC directx works fine but skip test, smoothness off, apply and OK!

Did you install the drivers that came with the card, or the latest version from nVidia?
Can you just skip the test to play in Direct 3D mode? Is software mode fast enough to play?

I fixed the problem by getting a new computer..lol...an yes I updated everything. But I didn't know you could skip the test!! I thought that was a must!! I did get to work on the old computer by skipping the test, ahhh I feel better
