i read in this forum 'suggestions for lockpicks' and they were talking about how warriors should be able to open chest without investing in the skill lockpicks.
So i thought why not make scrolls, or books, which allow you to use different skills maybe once or twice.
But then theres a problem of the level of the chests, so why not make scrolls have levels on them eg. level 5 lock picking scroll or level 2 lock picking scroll, so these can be used for the different chests.
This can also work on magic skills like elemenatal strike or repair. The same kind of idea, having different level of scroll which do more damage or more repair, so they all relate to having if you did level up your skill using skill points.
But if you have passive skills books or scrolls, you would have to put some time limit on them so they don't become a passive skill forever. But for the passive skill scrolls or books, the lower the level of the scroll the longer it lasts and the higher the scroll the shorter it will last. for example, the bow skill level 1 can last for 15 time units and the level 5 would only last 6 or 7 time units.
i also thought why not combine the scrolls. Combining the scrolls or books to make higher level scrolls, eg. level 1 lockpick scroll + level 1 lockpick scroll= level 2 lock pick scroll.
But these scrolls or books are not as rare as the permanent skill books. So this can make the game a bit more enjoyable and you can experience the different skills and magic in action.
So this should make the game better to people who are warriors or mages who do not want to level their skills using skill points.

hope you like it:D <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

A good idea. I've seen it in the first Diablo. If you found a book you could learn the spell, but finding a scroll allowed a one-time use of the spell, and it usually had a lower mana requirement.

Scrolls in D1 use no mana, but have a lower Magic requirement.

We're perfectly on track! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I think that's a great idea: Pay-per-use skills! They don't all have to be scrolls either. I'd offer some ideas, but I have to go right now...

Nine hours later...

Now I have the small problem that I can't remember what skills there were originally. I played almost enitrely with passive skills.

Rune stones or alchemical concoctions could be used for assault spells like Meteor Strike, Lightning and Poison Cloud (don't have a clue what it's really called). Holy Water for Bless. If lockpicking was free (ie. didn't require lockpicks), you could instead have lockpicks of various qualities. The only problem is that there are too many passive skills which you can't really have a one-use item for, unless it's a potion that lasts for a time. But then these bonuses are provided by equipment.

Oh, this feels far too hard to get right. (Maybe I just need sleep.) It worked in Diablo because the only skills you could acquire were spells. Divine Divinity is much too broad to simply include the same system. Though I would like to see books that teach skills in other Ways (of the Warrior/Survivor) as well. I remember seeing a screen shot of In-Between World where there was a skill book for one of the Warrior skills. It was an etched stone, like on the skill screen. I think it's a shame that idea was removed from the game.

Oh well. I need sleep. Good night!

We haven't deviated from Divinity. We're simply drawing inspiration from other sources. Different games do things in different ways. It makes sense to discuss which attributes are best from each game so that even better Divinity RPGs can be made in the future!
