Does anyone know why they don't sell game OST cd's in Europe? I know they sell 'em in the States - why would there be more interest for them in the States than here?

That's a thing I *often* wondered myself.

A question to the makers of Icewind Dale for example was answered that they "don't sell the soundtrack in Europe". I still have the e-mail to prove it.

Finally - a few weeks ago I saw a pack consisting of Icewind Dale and both BG parts - it contained the Soundtrack.

I once had the idea or an "opinion article" in mind (I thought I would write it for my small series at RPGDot), which should be named : "How US companies harm US customers". The idea was, that we often see US-based companied preparing for the US first - "first, bigger and better", that's the general rule. Take 2 even managed, for example, to publish Age of Wonders : Shadow Magic in the US first, although the game was developed in het Nederlands, here in Europe.

This behaviour of US-based publishers ("bigger, better, first") leads to some sort of anti-amricanism within Europe : european customers (gamers, that is) tend to feel like being treated as "second class customers" or generally speaking, to be inferior than US citizens.

To repeat : the "geral rule" we here in Europe often see ("bigger, better, first") leads to certain unfriendly feelings towards US customers and US publishers. I have read real complaints and even flame-wars about that.

Obviously, - as I see it (in my opinion) - the customers aren't "guilty" for that; it's thge policy of the great publishers.

What's a riddle to me is, how they still can be so insensitive and not notice the reactions they provoke by such a policy. I'm totally clueless about that.

I'm already sick of that, but I understand people defending themselves, because they have nothing to do with such a policy.

I can only warn you : The more the publishers keep on performing this policy, the more anti-americanism it will produce amongst european gamers. Be careful not to fall prey to this unpleasant thing.

ok ace.... are you a pop idoler, or an RPG'r with good taste!

OH! and thx Alrik once again to a fine link of musical perception!

Although I have a PSX lurking about somewhere, I can assure you that I've no dance mat. I love RPG's for their stoy, development system and music. So that makes me a at heart.

Don't pay too much attention to elreno, I think he's one of my buddies who I've just introduced to the net trying to wind me up.

Speaking of music, whats your favorite track? Mine is "A Perilous Path." I would stand around in the woods outside Aleroth just to hear it.

You know, Alrik, this would be an interesting article and would, at the very least, offer food for thought among the gaming community. I live in the US and even I am sometimes put off by the 'first, bigger and better' image. Selling any kind of product in the US usually creates an extremely competitive environment. And that stems from the capitalistic nature of our government. In fact, that atmosphere has spilled over into many areas of our culture - education included. But I digress.

For instance, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is a product of Take2 Interactive. They are headquartered in New York City, with international offices based in London. Sales and marketing offices are located in Cincinnati, Toronto, Paris, Munich, Vienna, Milan, Sydney, Amsterdam and Auckland. I know nothing about Take2 as a company and can only guess since it's US based, its European branches (sales and marketing) take direction from the headquarters in NY. In other words, the Amsterdam office may not have had as much say in how the game was marketed in Europe or if it did, the NY headquarters decided to take a different route. (Which, in large US corporations, is often the way).

Btw, if you do write the article and need help with any research, don't hesitate to give me a shout. I'm not saying that I am more knowledgeable about the gaming industry. I am saying that I love to do research. If the article is well-researched, I think it could make some impact on the way games are developed and marketed in the future.

(Just a few thoughts from an American who hasn't had her normal quota of morning coffee!)

Wow! Great site, Habba - thanks for giving the link. Playing it now on Media Player. The music is great. Btw, I love Gladiator's soundtrack and also Morrowind's music is probably my favorite of all game music. (But that's subject to change as I play more and more games!)

I love the Divine Divinity music too. The other day I was listening to it all the way through with some psychedelic patterns on Windows Media player. My favorite tracks are...

5. The Dwarven Halls Music -- I have never quite heard a track like this.
4. The Elven Village Music
3. A piece called "Shame and suffering" or something like that -- it plays when you are in the plague quarantine area.
2. "A Forest Dark and Deep" -- I can't remember exactly where it plays though.
1. Scorching Wind (the song that plays when you arrive in the Wasteland). I can listen to that track about 10 times in a row and not get sick of it.

If you like video game music, then you might like the music in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. Jesper Kyd did the soundtrack for that game and for Freedom Fighters -- his work is fantastic too.
