is it just me <survivor) or is there some really hard enemies at the beginning of the game, in the catacombs?

There are quests in town that can get you some experience, as well as places to be looted for better equipment. A bow and hit-and-run tactics can be helpful until you are stronger.

At the last catacomb level there is a tough fight. I liked it; it is actually one of the best battles of the game imo. And you cannot teleport out of it.
