Hi Larian folks,
My wife and I just finished our playthrough of DOS, and we had a great time. We definitely found the last part of the game very easy, but one major annoyance was that by the end we were swimming in gold. Over a million pieces, and another million-ish in assets, and there was nothing to spend it on. Huge amounts of vendor trash, very few decent items, so almost everything went to the vendors.

Is there some way to make the large amounts of gold we end up accumulating actually useful?

Not really. The economy is being worked on so that lots of items have reduced value, and they are probably making a bunch of changes to loot. I'm working on a mod to reduce the amount of loot you get while the vendors have more and better items. I'm going to give some vendors (especially the space trader in the homestead) some extremely expensive, unique items so that gold will feel more useful.

But sadly for your current playthrough, there's not much to use the gold for. The economy is poorly balanced, and you are far from the only one who has found this to be a problem.

I'm playing a run where I don't really steal, and while I do still have a great deal of gold, I have purchased a few legendaries which caught my eye (not a lot, but sometimes they do have better stuff than what I can get), and bought a lot of spellbooks, and that does help put significant dents in my coinpurse.

I've had as much as 90,000 at some points, but I'm back down to about 30,000 after picking up level 18 spellbooks for everyone.

So in fairness, it's not completely hopeless. If there were more and better things to get in stores, then that probably would cut back on the surplus gold a lot.
