1. How many followers can you have in the game? The screenshots that I have seen so far show just one.

2. Hopefully there's more to the story than what has been released in the previews? I'm worried that I actually know a little too much about the game now, like who that other character is in all the screen shots.

3. How much control do you have over your friends? Is it like Baldurs Gate, where you control them completely, or is it more like Diablo 2, where they fight by themselves?

you will always have two fixt players.
the deathknight and yourself.
but you can aquare some extra players in the form of "summoning dolls"

According to the Beyond Divinity FAQ you have "Total control over party members", but I do not know exactly how that is implemented.
When active, summoning dolls become controllable as a party member.

There would almost have to be more to the story than has been released, unless the Larians have decided to forgo a story altogether and just have an introduction as an excuse to go and kill things.
