i went to the location where the remove barrier spell is supposed to be, but i cannot find the scroll. I dug up the chest and later the lava flashed, but no barrier scroll. I am stuck.

and that is supposed to what? I tried and it doesn't produce any treasure.

Kill both mushrooms. It will dispel the barrier.

Is the lava supposed to come out that way? Once its out, there seems to be no way to get to the mound, the lever, or the chest. I'm not sure what I did to trigger the lava either.

There is a hidden pressure trap that activates the lava. You need high perception to detect it. If you walk to the edges, the trap can be avoided.

If you rise your fire res above 100% with fire shield, you can step on the lava.
