Hey guys,

I've just started DOS, and it's looking very nice indeed!

However, I'm running into one pretty considerable annoyance: When I zoom all the way in, I get a wonderful look at my character's cleavage - but in terms of game play it's pretty much useless - the angle is too steep.

Although I did find the settings to free up the camera to 360 degree view, I haven't found any way to tilt the camera to a more usable angle.

From the looks of it, there was a Cheat Engine script that might have helped, but it seems that it isn't compatible with the current version of the game.

Anyway ... Am I missing something?

There is no way to tilt the camera, that I know of.
An earlier version did have an automatic tilt when zoomed, but the behaviour was switched back (don't know why; maybe the tilt made it harder to zoom in to specific sections of the environment to interact with).

Well, rats!

But thanks for giving it to me straight.

It IS a pity, though. I LOVE the look and feel of this game, and zooming in amplifies the whole immersion thing.

(For me at least. I think I actually like the visual style more than the quasi-realism of something like DA:I or a hyper-modded Skyrim build.)

I'm not sure i get what you mean by 'usable angle' to be frank;

Assuming you have the camera unlocked from the menu, there's plenty of ground coverage allowed, both in terms of distance and angles.
In the off chance you have not used it, the over-the-top angle selection (ingame termed "Tactical Camera") does the rest.

Which is why i said i don't get you. It is an isometric RPG. What kind of use exactly did you have in mind you for an extreme zooming in?

edit: aaah..i see.. immersion.. the buzzword of post 2010 gaming. Ok.

Okay, so also not getting why it isnt "doing it for you", you can go top down tactical view and/or spin but I rarely spin and only top down when something isnt visible in standard isometric view. This isnt an FPS so being zoomed in is not a great idea, in fact I would say its a terrible way to play the game you will miss a heck of a lot of things or spend far more time finding them than needed.

Actually the camera on this is excellant, for comparison look at Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate, Fallout ( 1 and 2 and Tactics- not that abortion Fallout 3) or Temple of Elemental Evil, all good enough for the engine and time, but I find D:OS to be better.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah ... I understand that the "immersion thing" is kind of gauche for people with a broader gaming experience. Though I'm 42-years-old, I'm new to gaming, and ALL the games I've played until now have all been first/third person rpgs. (Specifically: Deus Ex HR, Skyrim, Witcher series, Mass Effect series, Dragon Age series and some Telltale games. And I only rarely used the isometric stuff in the DA games.)

So I'm just feeling kind of disoriented right now; it's like learning a new language. What I miss most is arriving in a new location and seeing it as though I were one of my characters.

Anyhoo: I'll give it some more time and see if I can get used to it.

(OTOH, and ceteribus paribus: Seems like a win-win scenario when you can play a game either way.)

(P.S. Though it guess it never is paribus, if the devs have to invest time on their models that could have been spent on content ... )

Take a look at Divinity 2 Developer's Cut; that might be an easier transition to isometric (the third person camera can be zoomed on a curved path, so it is almost an isometric perspective zoomed all the way out, it can be moved in behind the character, or you can zoom in past the character to look up).

Cool - I'll have a look.

OTOH, it's not like this middle-aged dog is completely incapable of learning new tricks. I think it was more that I hadn't really understood what I was getting into when I started playing.

Oh good for you buddy, branching out and experimenting are good things.

When you get used to it, its pretty good ( thats why I compared it favorably with other isometric games).

I do not like FPS interfaces so it goes both ways (and every gamer has their preferred style of games) and I really struggled with them in some of the Aliens games and in Fallout 3, never could really feel comfortable with them, in the end I went back to isometric and RTS games.

Welcome aboard! If you need help, there are a lot of good knowledgable players on here.

Heya!

Well ... since you guys are so friendly and all ...

I'm trying to track down this murder in Cyseal - but I'm having the devil's own time finding anything. It seems like I'm continually getting lost. Attempting to do something adventurous like walking from the tavern to the legion's headquarters can take 10 minutes.

So ... are there some basic tips about how to keep your bearings?? Should I be using the map more?

Again, it seems to be a problem of getting used to the top-down perspective, so maybe if I just keep playing, I'^ll have less trouble. (And: Maybe I should haven't set the option to let me turn the camera 360 degrees. If the perspective were locked, I supposed I'd have less trouble keeping my bearings.)

Yes, it would likely help to use the map a little more, for awhile (you can place custom map markers with notes). Once you walk through a few times you'll become more familiar with the town, and should not have that problem.
You can use the WASD or arrow keys to move the screen focus where you want to go, and then click on the ground there to move your characters.

The Home key will recentre the camera on the lead character, and return it to the default angle of rotation. That may help you get your bearings when checking the map.
