Hi all, I'm playing on Xbox one version of this game and last night I was messing with diff character builds and I noticed that on the preset builds there is 2 and 3 skills, I was messing with one of the preset builds that had 3 skills and I could adjust the points around and able to take 4 skills at the creation screen but I cannot put a check mark in the 4th skill as example I choose man of arms as my 4th skill and I cannot put a check mark in healing and put it on my hotbar.

Why can't I since I can choose a 4th skill since I have the 1 extra point to do so?

OR

Do I have to level up in the game, like lvl 2 then choose a 4th skill?

You are allowed to take three skills in character creation only, no matter how many skill schools you pick. Choose wisely, but don't worry too much, as you'll be able to pick up fresh skills soon after reaching town.

There are more low-level skills you can learn immediately than you are allowed to choose from in character creation. Most skills have to be purchased from a vendor to learn, although there are some pre-placed skillbooks lying around in certain places.

Generally speaking, you should only focus on two main skill schools, as there are not enough points in the game to max out more than three abilities (and trying to max out a third ability will eat up essentially eat up all your points). Taking more than two schools is possible, but only if you don't plan to go too far into some of the trees.

Rank 4 in a spell school allows you one master spell. Since there is only one "powerful" spell in each spell school, it makes sense to get rank 4 in each of the elemental schools. That gives you access to all 4 of the once-per-combat ultimate, Meteor shower, Hail attack, Earthquake, and Storm. There are more than enough points to do this. in fact, you could even reach rank 4 in all 5 spell schools if you wanted.

Uh, no.

Let's do the math here. There are no bonuses to skill-granting abilities. You get 5 ability points on character creation. Levels 1-5 give you 1 ability point per level (5). Levels 6-11 give you 2 ability points per level (12) Levels 12+ give you three per level, but let's set the cap at level 20 (27). So that's 5 + 5 + 12 + 27 = 49.

It takes 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 points to reach rank 4 in one ability. So to take 4 elemental schools up to Rank 4, that consumes 40 of the 49 possible ability points from leveling, leaving you exactly NINE (9) to use on anything other than skill schools.

That means that if you go for the 4 schools @ 4 build, you won't be able to get anything else above Rank 3 (and even then you'll only be able to get one thing to Rank 3).

Is it technically possible to get 4 schools up to Rank 4? Yes. Does it make sense to do so, at the expense of everything else (especially protection from status effects)? ... In my opinion, no. At the very least, it is nowhere NEAR as much of a "no-brainer" choice as you imply it is.

(And YES I know about
the Talent trade and the pair of +3 ability point books.

It still doesn't change my opinion on that.)

Perfect, because rank 3 witchcraft is all you need anyway. May as well go ahead and glass cannon too. Definitely worth it for a mage, especially since they suck at literally everything but casting those particular spells anyway.
