Are these the guardians in the 4 tombs? For three of them I found the best tactic was to stand close to where they appear and immediately attack when they do; for the other I retreated, took out the weaker skeletons first, then attacked the guardian by itself. Stun helps, though I did not start using it until later. A bow and hit-and-run tactics can be very effective, especially near the beginning of the game. You can also leave Aleroth, and level up a bit on the orcs outside (going south you would start running into tougher orcs, though). If you drink a shadow potion and use your spin attack near (but not directly on) a creature, you will hit it without turning visible (ie they will stand there taking damage and not counter attack). I think he means Level 2, at the entrance to Level 3; and the Slasher chamber.
With the Skeletal Summoner, try using the Whirlwind Attack if he gets a few summonings out. You can quickly take down a mob with a few clicks of that.
With the Skeletal Guardian, I'd suggest a bow or crossbow. Either that or just bolt for the ladder until you're stronger.

You can also use Gregor (i think his name is as a meat shield. If Gregor makes any kills you won't get exp for them though. As a mage you can spam meteor strike and take them out easily. A bow may help if you are the warrior.

Identify the Axe first. I think any of the healers can identify items.

That's one thing I found annoying:
When I first met them, I accepted the quest. After I found Slasher, actually I reconsidered and decided I wanted to kill them after all. But the game won't let you! That's idiotic! I mean you can attack pretty much everyone in the game (with the exception of some important chars that are unkillable) - but you can't attack a stupid orc just because you've accepted their quest! Hmph!
Yes, maybe it's not honorable to accept the quest first and then to turn on them - but it's not completely nonsensical. I mean when you first run into those orcs, they might just be a bit hard to kill for you. When you come back with the axe, however, you might be strong enough - and rightly decide: no orc gets to live if I have a choice about it.

If you piss the orcs off enough they'll turn hostile. Just keep telling them you can't find it.

I am sorry but I don´t find that stupid at all. I mean it makes perfect sense to me. You made a deal with the Orcs. How about you found the axe and give it to them and then they turned up to be hostile and kill you? Now that would be stupid for me.

No... that's pretty much what I'd expect an Orc to do actually... *shrugs*

Why would you help the orcs though? Experience aside, you know they're going to take the weapon out someplace (no matter what they tell you) and use it's power to rape & pillage. Nasty orcses... we don't likes em do we precioussss........ *blinks* ...... *looks around* ... erm... heh *gives the ring back to frodo*

Why would you help the orcs though? I saved and game him the axe, and as he left he said not to use the ladder because it came out in an orc camp, and that we were friends now. I thought this could mean he might be an ally later on, but never even heard mention of him again. Also, I tried killing them, but got more experience for giving him the axe.

When you get Slasher, keep it and sell it - if anyone's got the gold. Go back to Smirnuk and you'll still be given the option to give him the "axe" and fulfill the quest somewhat better off.

yeh they supposed to be an honorable warrior race but they have been corrupted. If you want to kill "The great Smiruk" give him the wrong axe, then say, "I just wanted to see what you would do" Then he will say sumtihn like "Goddamn Trikster Human.Kill The Pigskin!" then you can kill him
