Bought this game the other day, played around nine hours and have come to a standstill. I've done every quest related thing I can find in Cyseal and reached Level 3 with around 5,000 points still to go before I reach level 4.

Whenever I go to any of the gates the soldiers tell me I'm not experienced enough to go through. Eventually, in despair, I tell them to let me through anyway and find that they're right - I get summarily flattened by a group of orcs exploring through the West gate and through the North East gate, I find an acid puzzle thing that I can't figure out (I put boxes and barrels on the mine things that stops the acid, but when I try it on the further mines, everything just blows up) and a pack of Level 7 wolves which bizarrely I came close to actually beating but could not. I haven't been through the other North gate but they tell me I'm not experienced enough to do that one either and if it's anything like the others, they're right.

I need to level up but there's nothing left to fight. And I don't know how to further any of the current quests without going beyond the city where I get killed.

Am I missing some significant chunk of the game somewhere or some area?

The only unknown paths for quests I have outstanding are:

  • The headless guy who I've managed to steal and wants me to take him to Reginald's cellar. I have no idea where this is and it's not marked on my map.
  • The elf who wants me to kill Victoria. I've told her and we agreed to tell the legion captain (Aureus?). However, he wont do anything without evidence and I don't know how to get that.

There is also the Fabulous Five quest about Arhu's robot. However, Arhu has no dialogue about that and as far as I can work out, my next task is to go North through one of those "you're not experienced enough" gates.

I have to say, I'm finding this game exceedingly frustrating. I just want to fight some things, gain XP. There's nothing to fight unless I start callously killing townsfolk. Or have I missed something? I spent about two hours just wandering around trying to progress with the murder quest before eventually looking online and finding that I'm supposed to break into Esmeralda's basement and steal a load of meat so that I can find the hidden switch to reveal a hidden room. That's beyond tricky - why would I start stealing her food? Especially as I know she's not the guilty one because I stole some of her dirty knickers (lovely!) and got the dog to sniff them for traces of Jake (again, what??).

So is there a dungeon or something I'm missing? I'm playing on Tactitician but I do not believe this is the problem - I completed DAI and DAII on Nightmare. I always play games on harder levels and this isn't the hardest. The game itself tells me I need to get higher level before going further, but there's nothing left to do to get there. I'm happy to fight things all day to slowly get the 5,000XP I need to level up, but there's nothing TOO fight.

How do I solve this? Most unhappy.

Have you picked up a couple companions, if you are not playing Lone Wolf (talent) main characters?

The easiest gate to leave through is behind the King Crab inn; it is open, and you don't need to ask guards to get through. When getting the legion quests, it is mentioned the undead are weaker north west of town.

There is also some combat you can find within Cyseal, if you explore, that is suitable for a level 3 party. Hint (minor spoiler):
There are some tunnels underground with a couple of access points in town and one just outside.
Explicit spoiler:
The easiest entrance to find is digging the largest pile of dirt in the graveyard. Digging other graves may or may not be suitable for a level 3 party.

Well it took a little doing. I went out of the North gate and found with a little effort there were things I could kill there. Cost me a Resurrection scroll but after a few fights and some dialogues, I managed to hit Level 4. I also found Reginald's house after talking to the head but I can't get in because you need Lockpicking 2. There's a hireling who has that which I can now get because I'm level 4. Seems an expensive way to get access to the house, mind.

But anyway, finally making progress again.

Hey,

if you drop the talking head on the street, it will scold you because it is not the right place and after that you can ask him where Reginald's house is.

As for the elf who wants to see Victoria dead: You can find the evidence in his pockets.

I don't know what you have already done, so i cant tell you if you missed something.
Have you digged up the graveyard?

Thanks. That's really useful. I'm starting to pick up that you're supposed to have an evil personality to progress in this game - randomly digging up people's graves, stealing peoples' hams for no reason. The only grave I dug up is Jake's, for example.

Yes, you were right about the the undead. I'm a little further along now and hopefully if I can get past this odd jump, it'll start coming together again. I'll check out those tunnels now that I know they're there. Cheers.

Ah, not skilled enough to pick the elves pockets. I guess I need to hire a Rogue now that I'm high enough level to get a decent one.

Hey. The map was really useful. Thanks a lot for that.

I'm getting further now, but have one more question not worth its own thread - why am I poisoning people? Baredaughter keeps shooting people and then poisoining them. Which is extremely counter-productive with undead because it heals them.

I can't find any reason why this is happening. The bow is the one that you buy from the skeleton on the beach outside Cyseal - the one with the little balls to the left of the icon which I'm guessing fill up as you level. There's nothing on the item description that indicates poisoning that I can see and it happens when I use ricochet, when I just fire regular shots... I've checked my items and I can't see anything that gives me that power. How can I stop this? It's really making it hard to use the character.

Does the combat log say Bairdotr is doing poison damage, or are undead just bleeding poison when getting hit by piercing damage, and healing from that.
Do you have the Elemental Ranger damage? That could add extra poison damage to attacks if they are standing in poison.

I tried that bow killing a few townspeople in the harbour, and didn't do any poison damage, just piercing. That was at level 3; with a level 15 Bairdotr from a different playthrough, in the harbour and Silverglen she did piercing damage, and if it wasn't a one hit kill, also shadow damage.

It doesn't say she's doing poison damage. So I guess zombies and zombie boars bleed poison onto the ground, and then heal from standing in it! That would never have occurred to me as an explanation but it appears that you're right! Thanks!

The same can happen when attacking a fire elemental, etc, or if one of your characters with the Leech talent is attacked and bleeds.

You can't get in the house? Have you tried burning the door down?

There are multiple ways to do things in this game. A locked door shouldn't stop you most of the time.

And regarding digging up graves ... I generally don't like doing those things either. However, if you don't explore all areas, you are missing out on game content. I left a few graves alone, such as the one with the dialog, and the old woman's relative, but the others I dug up. There is valuable experience to be had there.

I make sure to explore every nook and cranny of every dwelling I enter. Upstairs, cellar, everything. Sometimes, cellars lead to interesting places.

I also take everything I can get my hands on. In doing so, I can try out recipes and discover more about the game. Also, if I'm going to help the citizens of Cyseal, they had better start contributing to the cause. smile

I've never pickpocketed in other games, like Skyrim, but I do in this game. I like the challenge and the game mechanic. It also makes sneaking useful, as well as gear with the pickpocket bonus. It's too juicy to pass up!

I am level 4 and I have yet to step out of the city. I am too busy crafting, procuring valuables, selling, buying, and trying to figure out what spellbooks I need for the 4 characters. I'm over 50 hours at this point. smile

Just judging by your first post I have to ask the question, how far along the quest lines are you? Lots of experience points there...your post talks about nothing except killing things and getting x-points...been to the Lighthouse? What about Time's end? Light-house area of the game is actually where you should go to begin with. You should have four in your party, as well, when you head out there.

Also, it's obvious you are not talking to people fully enough to get them to reveal certain things and present certain options...It doesn't sound as if you are doing much of anything except walking around looking for combat--if so you cannot play the game that way and expect to progress. There are multiple story lines that you need to pursue through your log--if you thought this was a combat game in which you simply kill and level up--well, it's not and you would miss 9/10ths of the game trying to play it that way. If all you want to do is fight and level up I'm afraid this game is far too involved with other things to suit you--it's much deeper than that.

It's a great game, if you play it, that is...:) Hope you get squared away!

I'm never wrong about anything, and so if you see an error in any of my posts you will know immediately that I did not write it...;)
