Hi everyone!

im new to this forum and i was wondering how will the armor/gear for the different races work?

example: when a lizard equip a standart leather armor will it have the apperance of lizard racial-style armor (like the ones we see in character creation) or will it be the look of the standard leather armor tailored to the lizard model? and will there be racial armor that the other races can wear? like a human that wears an elf armor?

If I remember correctly... they are doing what some games do... and armor just suddenly changes in style and appearance as soon as it reaches someone elses hand.

Or rather... Leather armor looks radically different depending on what race has it.

But REALLY don't take my word for it... I am working on pure memory here... I'll have to double check later.

oh well it makes sense, but it would be really neat if you could aquire racial-themed armors for all the other races, but then again they would have to make adjustments to, say all their elf-themed armor so that it fit all the other races models and that could be alot of work for something that may not be so high on the priority list for the game.

I guess I can't really object to armour changing shape to accommodate race any more than it changes size to accommodate different builds: it seems to be a standard RPG thing that the same armour that fits a muscular 6'4" barbarian will also fit a slight 5'2" rogue. I remembered once suggesting elsewhere that looted armour should really be taken to an armourer or a tailor to be adjusted and de-flead before it could be used but people didn't seem keen on that idea; I guess it appealed to me as I like things like mandatory eating and sleeping but apparently most people don't.

About the only example I remember of armour specifically not fitting was Morrowind's Argonians (or was it Khajiit?) complaining about not being able to find boots that would fit, but by the time of Oblivion they had the regular omnisized human feet that could wear any old boots that were available.

There are arguments for both sides. A strong argument against race-specific armor is that it makes loot table balancing even more of a headache.

Those ideas are satan and should be banished from games. It is pointless busywork which interferes with the actual fun parts of games.

Goodness Stabbey, let the games that want to go that far into fidelity to do.

Mind you it has no place in THIS game... But I wouldn't go as far as to say that 'No game' should have it.

would you guys like to go more in-depth on the pros and cons of race specific armors? both from a game-design view and in-game (i guess player) view on racial armors? like if you would expand on your example Stabbey with loot-balancing, why does it make loot balancing more of a headache if its racial armors?

what does racial armors bring to the content table? and should the racial armors be locked to its races or should they be like crafting recepies/schematics that you can earn from by example gaining a trusted reputation with a race?

i would like to know everyones thoughts on this since im really intrested smile

I like this idea smile

Divinity is a game which relies a lot on crafting. I think you should be able to equip an armor from another race by using some crafting to shape it to your size and body shape. But there could be some limitations, like an elvish armor might not have enough material to make a dwarven one.

It should be obvious. Instead of "Great! This armor is good for a warrior and I'm a warrior", it becomes "This armor is good for an elf warrior... but I'm a dwarf warrior. It's no good for me. Now I have to look for other armor drops and hope that I get one that is both for my race and the role I am trying to fit." Instead of just one condition which the armor needs to meet before it can be good for you, it needs to meet two conditions. It's the difference between odds of 1 in 4 and 1 in 16. In a game with finite loot available, a satisfying loot system is very important.

If you can alter the armor in some way, say, having to take it to a smith, that does solve the loot balancing problem, but it adds an unneeded extra step which gets between You------>You-in-Cool-Armor. Especially irritating if you would need to stop in the middle of what you're doing and go all the way back to town.

I think people are being a bit binary here :P

Since the game currently has racial armors... they just magically turn into a different set of racial armor when another race rubs up against them :P

It would definately be nice if "Elf Armor" was still Elf Armor even when a Dwarf is wearing it.

But that is significantly more work.

(With the third option of course being racial armors... being bared except to certain races)

First of all thank you for the different responses, its a nice read and its nice to get other peoples view on this smile

while were at racial armors/gear, have we gotten any information if the pre-gen origins character/companions with their origin/personal quests, will they get specific loot rewards only they can equip? if they get specific loot rewards at all that is.
Think DA: inquisition with companion helmets that only they can use or will it be in the style of D:OS when you recruited a companion that anyone can equip their personal gear?

since D:OS 2 brings all these amazing races to the game would origin specific quest loot rewards (if equipable by other characters) be racially locked?

example: the red price personal quest rewards him with "the red prince crown"-helmet should other lizard PC be able to equip it? IMO it would be cool since you get some nice unique loot and it makes sense to why its racially locked and from a development view you only have to make the loot work for one race, which is nice.

That would lend more realism into the game as would wear and tear on items.

But I'll be happy if they create a stable game that we can create our own stories and adventures. Maybe Larian could allow the user community to design and create custom items? Doesn't seem too hard to code racial limitations on items if desired.

This might be a good idea to go put into the Editor thread that is stickied. As long as what you're saying isn't like 'we contribute ideas for items/amor/etc. for larian to implement' (Swen as stated before that user created content is a terrible idea).

These "morphing" armors are one of the worst things for me, especially if it's as extreme as with some of the designs here, like the elven one. That simply cuts off too much characteristics.
Extreme bummer.

But that is significantly more work.

That depends. Theoretically, they could design the armour once, and then use some specially designed mechanics to morph automatically to fit a range of body shapes. In the long run, it should be less work, and it would be much friendlier to modders who want to create custom items. They could even use the system when designing humanoid monsters. You could outfit orcs using the same system for example.

But this is wishful thinking. I doubt the mechanics in D:OS2 are so sophisticated. It's likely they will have to handcraft every item of wearable clothing to fit at least 8 different body types (the brute force method), which makes me worry about the diversity of armours that will be available in the game. D:OS already suffered from a lack of diversity with only 2 body types.

Perhaps we can add it to the wish list for D:OS3?

why not wish for it in D:OS2? they game will be early access to those who use steam the 15th and it will be quite some time untill the game is fully released so there will be time to wish for things and help with improvemnt of the game with testing/finding bugs, so since i dont know how much armor diversity there is in D:OS2, but it seems to be alot more then D:OS (which is awesome!), if enough of the community would wish for more more armor models in the early development of the game, maybe Larian would consider making more smile

Different strokes for different folks, but I just hope that not all type of armor will look like torn rags on the elves xD

This.

I would like to add that lizard armor should be race specific IMO and only fit lizards because of their drastically different body proportions.

Absolutely, but I expect to be disappointed.
