Characters, when they explore, have a "light ring" going around, which highlights everything and makes pretty much pointless/useless lighting. Let's put those torches and glowing vegetation to use!

I actually quite like the light ring! Well, in lieu of an actual equippable torch, but I agree that aesthetically it's a bit something-or-other. That said, quite often, having to provide your own light is a bit of a pain: dishonourable mentions being the very limited battery life of Gordon Freeman's suit light and Doom 3 guy's torch that was too big and heavy to use at the same time as any firearm. Droppable torches worked well enough in Oblivion (though it's been so long that I don't remember if they were in the original game or an add-on) but were still a bit of a faff.

Yes, I am a malcontent and have woken up in a grumpy mood this rainy Sunday!

i have never noticed this.
I mean is this intentinal? should darkness be a factor in the game?

Nope, and I'm not sure why the OP is assuming it should.

Honestly, in a isometric party-based game (so with many characters under your control at any given time) where there isn't even a "quick switch" option to "alternate between torch and weapon" I could only see it becoming a very tedious annoyance.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

They put a lot of work in improving the lighting system.
Considering that there is renewed emphasis on stealth, I believe that snuffing torches out should have an effect. After all, npc sight radius could reduce according to how well-lit an area is.

And portable torches would be great.

It would add a lot of atmosphere, and be ideal for setting up ambushes.

I agree it would be cool but it would also be a lot of work altering guard vision to reflect light levels and could end just being fiddly. To me the light ring sort of represents the characters carrying a torch without having the player needing to manually select the torch and then manually switching back to weapons when a fight starts.

IIRC the light ring is disabled when sneaking.

But everything is greyed out!
