Having not played the series before, I am entirely lost on all of the lore in the setting.

I have tried to look it up but to no avail. Can we get some kind of comprehensive ingame codex that will give us lore tidbits and information.

Trying to make decisions is difficult not knowing the details. For example, do Lizards even believe in the Divine? What are Magisters? Where do the races come from? What's the difference between Sorcery and Sourcery? etc.

-Boss this guy is asking about Lizard lore!
-What? What lizards?
-You remember you liked that Red Prince character design, and we had to create a whole race out of it? We named them Lizards sir.

Lol, that's the idea for new KS campaign.

The Divinity Codex! Hardcover with nice arts, and digital download edition. Some elven underwear for the perverts.

Try to read the wiki.

To be fair, there were lizards way back in Divine Divinity! Indeed they were one of the races represented by the Council of Seven, whereas some others weren't, such as goblins and, er, the undead. Though controversially I'm not entirely convinced that the undead strictly speaking count as an actual distinct race.

And indeed there are (at least) two, on Fextralife and Wikia. Pick your favourite! Pick both! etc.

The wiki could help you with some basics, be prepared for a lot of inconsistency tho.

Divinity games don't build up on each other (lorewise) and you can play one without the knowledge of other titles.

An in-game codex would be greatly appreciated. With a page for every important character/creature you meet and/or kill.

Knowing the previous series lore would actually confuse you more because the lore changes every game.

For example, "Elves" didn't used to have horns or skin textured like tree bark and there was no mention of cannibalism.

Overall it produces the impression that Larian writers and producers get together in a big group and take a take a test on the the lore established in previous games in the series. The one who gets the lowest score on the test becomes the one who determines the lore for the next game.

To be fair, they now want to create the definitive lore after all this years. So we finally may get a good overview for the rest of the world. But to be honest, besides the elves I and Source can't really remember much that got changed.

But even in Divinity 2, the Patriach mentioned "Creation Magic" or something like that, before it got a big concept. So they retcon some thing, but it is about rewiriting it so much, that it doesn't feel like a retcon. I mean, the Ultima series for example retconned itself also a lot it was praised for it's lore.

And thankfully for Divinity, a lot of lore wasn't very connected, since every game after Beyond Divinity stood on it's own feed.

I'd rather hope that there will be books, scattered dialogues, etc that allow you to infer more about each race's history, culture, anatomical oddities, etc in the game as you go about, rather than just a loredump all in one place.
