Well, I've loved the game in so many ways, but I'm happy to be just about hitting (i think) endgame. I've hit level 19, found my way into the Source Temple and come up against a door that days I need to remember myself (or something) to continue. Well, I've no idea what that means so I looked it up and it seems I probably don't have enough bloodstones.

Now, to be honest, much of the plot has gone over my head (chatting in the Homestead about time travel and being missing from a tapestry with an annoyingly shrill imp while fireballs constantly rain down on me isn't really conducive to absorbing the story, but anyway...) So I hadn't paid too much attention to my bloodstones. I didn't know that I would need a certain amount of them to continue and to be honest I can't remember if I even still own all the ones I have collected or whether I've sold some of them. I've only opened up a couple of rooms at the homestead and I have a handful of inert stones.

So, I'm looking at my maps and feeling a bit frustrated that the game isn't slightly better at communicating to me what I need to do to progress. I've seen lists online for where the stones are but to be honest I can't even remember all of the ones I've already found. Is there any way of me knowing where I need to go and what I need to do without laboriously repeating areas and backtracking again?

I've loved the game but I'm ready to finish now, and it seems to have thrown up one last insurmountable hurdle...

You need to end the attack on the homestead before more portals will open. Check your quest log or talk to Zixzax; basically, you need to do something in norther Luculla Forest.
Destroy a large blood stone, using tenebrium damage.

Blood stones give experience when used, fully heal your party and resurrect and dead party members (and are used for a couple of side quests). Even without the connection to opening portals in the homestead, you should not have been discarding them.
The inert stones are not required, though if you keep them it does make it easier to keep track of how many blood/star stones you have found.

Stop the attack on the homestead, and see how many portals Zixzax opens (using some or all of the blood stones you have, if required).
That may finish off the portals (open all but the Forbidden Zone one), or at least get you close enough to be able to check a couple places on the list that you're pretty sure you didn't already get the blood/star stone from.
It is also possible to bypass the door.
Drop a teleporter stone in front of the door (I got it to work dropping on the left side, a few steps back), then drag and drop it from the past the door (rotate the camera to see; you might need to move the cursor around a bit to find a place where the pyramid is outlined in white and you can drop it).

Thanks for the help Raze. I've not discarded any bloodstones but I have used then for purposes other than opening up homestead portals. I can't remember if I still have all the inert stones I'd accumulated so it's good to know that that shouldn't matter.

Using blood stones always counts towards opening portals, even if used in a quest, during combat, etc, or while the homestead is under attack (and portal opening is temporarily suspended).

You cannot use them for 'purposes other than opening up homestead portals' because using a blood stone or auto-consume a star stone automatically unlocks homestead rooms. Even using them for quests like curing Alfie opens a new room.

What can happen is that ZixZax does not reset when unlocked rooms are not visited or when newly unlocked rooms are left with Rift Travel instead of their portal the first time. This would block further rooms from being unlocked, their unlocking would be queued though.
So maybe you go to the homestead and check if Zixzax is still standing in front of one of the portals instead of sitting next to the Weaver.
