Currently, if you obtain the soul jars before meeting the necromancers, it doesn't appear that destroying those jars has any affect on the Necromancers. I've destroyed all of them while standing directly adjacent to the necromancers.

I've destroyed one before meeting them and found a skeleton, destroyed another in front of them and it did work, but I think I absorbed a soul from one so I couldn't kill the last one.

Is there a quest related to these soul jars?

i did this quest on a new play though last night, even if you absorb the soul for the source point all you need to do is drop the empty jar and attack it once all 3 have been destroyed the quest will complete even if you do not have the quest in your log to begin with, as its easy to do the vault or the tower in random order,
