I admit it, I have only standard cooling for my CPU.

That said, I am noticing that no matter what settings I use graphically, this game often causes my CPU (i7 3770) to run at max, and temps regularly get over 100C.

at the same time, I only have what is now considered an average video card (Nvidia 760gtx), but even at high settings, it is only running that card at around 70%, and temps never get above 65C, which is about what I would expect.

it tells me a number of routines that could be handled by the graphics card (like physx routines) are being sent to the CPU instead.

Even enabling shader caching doesn't have much effect.

for optimization, especially given more modern rigs than mine, I highly recommend working on shifting more routines to be processed by the GPU instead of the CPU.

Hell, I can run Doom 2016 on high settings and it doesn't affect the CPU as much as this game does, and there are WAYYY more physical routines to process in that game than this one.

people are not going to want to buy a better than standard CPU cooler just to play this game.

just FYI, as I have always loved Larian studios for the attention to detail they give their games.

cheers.

There will be optimizations made later in development, but I don't think that is normal...

I haven't checked temperature, but my CPU (i5 3570K, standard clock and cooling) didn't max out when I tested this. I ran around for about 15 minutes, set off some traps, got into combat, etc, and stayed pretty much in the 50-75% range, only getting a spike up to 100% for a second, after getting killed and returning to the main menu. That is up from 20-35% CPU utilization with a bunch of background programs open. Other specs: Radeon HD7870, 16GB RAM, Win7.

Please email supportdos2@larian.com, with a description (or link to this topic) and a dxdiag report (or a Dropbox or Google drive link, etc). To get a report, hit WinKey-R, type in dxdiag and hit enter, then when it finishes loading click on the 'Save All Information...' button and save the report somewhere handy.

will do.

it's quite consistent for me.

I only get a 10% reduction in usage if I turn off ambient occlusion.

turning off things like antialising, turning down lighting quality, etc, only change the GPU utilization, what was already fine even on ultra settings.

no effect on CPU, so that is behaving normally.

... I also checked core utilization (affinity), and it's using all 7 cores, so that's one thing eliminated.

I wonder if I need to update the drivers for my CPU? it's been a couple of years since I did that.

gpu is up to date.

hmm.

others on steam have been reporting similar issues, but with entirely different rigs.

I'll try the suggested "changed to non-exclusive windowed mode" and see if that helps.

edit:

yes, going "fake windowed" helped significantly. temps back down into the low 80s on the cpu, which is fine.

oddly, my framerate suffers a bit, but I can live with that.
