Have a new survivor character
just wanted some beginning advice/tips to getting him started
also how do you get into George's bedroom after you give him the plant to satisfy his addiction or whatever his problem is? I want to open that chest but the back door doesnt show when you walk around the house?

You can use the alt key to show doors on the northern side of houses. Alternately, you will have another opportunity to loot George's bedroom after completing the catacombs.

Is his bedroom worth the trouble?

I once found a spider statuette in the chest. Saving and re-loading enough times would eventually get you a spell book from the bookcase (though using the alt key to find the door would probably set its contents). Looting the shop while he is in the bedroom is much more rewarding than the reverse, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
