The spell affects are amazing although some of the summons could use alittle work.
There is unoficial patch, that upgrades your familiar, henchmen and summons. It makes them smarter, gives you more control over them. You can look into fam and hench inventory, give or equip them armor and weapons. This patch works excellently on spellcasters. You can tell your mage what spells to cast. I am playing with Wizard as my main and Buddy (sorcerer) as my hench. He can also cast familiar and summon. So, now we have party of 6 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Enemies also became smarter.
If you are interested I can send details on this patch.

As for blockyness, disagree, graphics are just great. 3d - there is also some kind of patch that gives you absolute freedom to rotate (up and down included), I haven't tried it myself though, but people recommend.
As for quests, I am not far in the game, just started chapter 2 in main NWN camp. I would say quests are ok, not horrible, but not especially memorable either. I can live with that. There are rare games with large number of really good quests.
Spells animations are great.
Weapons and armor have great graphics, especially when I look into inv, maybe even best ever seen.
I agree with LBane, further polishing it (especially quests part) Bioware can reach very high ratings.

I have played Gothic 2, I liked it. It has a lot of freedom and it is third person. But, still it is different experience from for example Morrowind. It is more linear. Graphics and sound very nicely done. The game has it's own atmosphere, and it's own world.
I recommend you to try it.
