So my friend and I just got into the game and we tried to run an Archer/Mage combo (which is what we went with through DOS 1) and got our butts handed to us on classic mode.

Got wrecked by crocodiles and frogs and just about anything that looked at us funny lol. It seemed that by the time we got through both their armors they were already on top of us and putting us on the ground.

Are there any decent 2 player combos that we should try out? Should we both focus on either physical or magical so we only have to deal with one type of armour?

Is it your plan to play only with 2 characters or did you just not know, that you could recruit up to two additional characters? The start is pretty hard, even more if you play only with two characters, just because of the insane amount of armor they have.

My friend and I started with a scoundrel and support mage, we recruited lizard as warrior and elf as ranger. Focusing on one kind of armor makes it for sure easier to kill enemies. This can also mean, focus physical damage on Enemy A and magic damage on Enemy B, but not do both on A.

yeah, only two characters. We each wanted to control one character, not have one character with another following on a leash.

I that case, you have a pretty tough way in front of you. You will have to sneak arround and explore a lot, until you got a level high enough for decent skills. But even then not sure how much cheese will be needed for the fights, it is really tough to get bast all those armors. Archer will probably need scoundrel as well for more armor penetrating skills. Mobility skills will be important aswell. For high damage output two mages are perhaps the best, just let everything explode with fire & poison, and stun or freeze them, after magic armor melted away. or perhaps pure physical with archer and tank, using mage mainly for support (more armor, haste, heal, teleport, etc.)

The game is more 'planned' for four people parties and the balancing is pretty off still because of Alpha anyway.

I used the the custom party trick to create an elf Archer and a lizard Battlemage. Was able to complete Act 1 with this duo, though had to retreat on a few battles.
