I haven't been playing D2 yet, but with AI 2.0 I decided to try out the arena, just to see it in action.

I've only played twice, so this may just be something obvious I'm missing, but it seems like almost every spell or effect I try on the AI enemies is blocked by "magic armor", even when I don't see a magic armor effect on them.

I can knock them down, but forget curse, or freeze, or whatever else my ranger throws at them.

What's up?

Also, I did kill their mage once, and then tried to use the vampiric ability to get a whatchyamacallit point from his corpse so I could cast bigger spells. It looked like it worked, but I got no points from it. Is there a failure chance of that one, or am I missing something else about it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Magic armor is the little blue bar above / near their health, not a status effect.

Source points are on your character portrait - they're the little orbs. Were any of them filled in after you used Source Vampirism or what have you?

Ahh ok! So do you have to wear through the magic armor first?

I think I saw a source circle fill up, but when I looked at my character sheet it said source:0

Is that just my starting source, like a stat?

Thanks for the info!

Yes, before you can CC (Crowd Control)( the enemies, you need to wear down their magic or physical armor - the grey or blue bars. Blue for magic, grey for physical. The armor, once gone, means you can, say, freeze, or curse, or catch enemies on fire. The same applies to you, of course ; no more blue or grey bar means you can get CCed, but as long as you have that bar left over after an attack hits you you're immune to those sorts of things.

If one of those source circles is full, then that's what matters. I don't know what character sheet you're talking about, unless you eman the thing what pops up when you hit the "I" key, and even then I've almost never looked at it except to level up.
As long as those little circles by the character portrait are filled in (Notably being COLORED, blue I think) then you have source points. The max you can have at this time is three.
