You know what would be nice? If there was a way to make our awesome abilities even more awesome.
I don't know what or how that would be granted or achieved, but I think it would be a fun mechanic to have in the game if later on, our most basic abilities became stronger, providing different new ways to approach fights or offering this extra bonus that would help them scale along the game when more and more stronger abilities get introduced.
What I was thinking of are improved abilities that replaced/modified old abilities like those:
Bull Charge (Battering Ram): Now clear surface on the path traveled.
Rejuvenation (Restoration): Now also remove Acid.
Medical Care (First Aid): Now heal for an additional 10%.
Cleansing Rain (Rain): Now also remove Necrofire effect from characters, doesn't remove Necrofire surfaces.
Fire Starter (Ignition): Grant 1 AP if a target is burned by this ability.
Favourable Gust (Favourable Wind): Favourable Wind buff now grant immunity to Slowed. Removed by Crippled to prevent the Crippled effect from applying.
Magical Poison Bomb (Magical Poison Dart): Increased radius.
Marksman's Bite (Marksman's Fang): Now apply Bleeding on targets with no Physical Armor.
Controlled Combustion (Spontaneous Combustion): Now only damage enemies.
Dragon Leap (Phoenix Dive): Now shatter the ground around the landing point, dealing extra Earth damage to anyone caught in the blast radius, excluding the user of this ability.
etc.
You could even make branching abilities like:
Dragon Leap or Meteor Crash to replace Phoenix Dive, one making the ability deal Physical damage around impact zone while the other deal Magical damage around impact zone.
