I've been playing pillars of eternity as a substitute recently and i am having alot of fun with the custom formations.
I have 3 (at least 1 original) ideas of implementation

1. Allow us a turn to move our characters at the cost of initiative. The current AP per movement cost i have in mind is 1 initiative per 3m, since having it linked with movespeed would be WAY too abusable. I feel this one is the most compatible with multiplayer but have no idea how abusable it could be.

2. A simple the characters walk in this formation all the time kind of thing. To expand i mean we create formations through either a grid or setting distances between each character at all times. This way the characters don't move when the battle starts preventing the gltiches on the terrain freezing characters

3. Allow us to give up our next turn in order to move our character. To expand we'll be able to use 2 turns at once BUT in exchange on the first turn you can't use items/spells/attack being only a positioning turn.

D:OS 1 had formations. They were removed in D:OS 2 because ____________________. (I have no idea why they were removed.)

Having pre-set formation could be interesting especialy when your playing alone.
Usually have to unbound all 4 characters to each other and move them around to get ready for the fight so that they don't stand in a pile and get massive CC because they are getting bottle of fire and stuff thrown at the whole group....

Didn't happen often because most fight don't start with the AI throwing stuff at you....but that would solve it....actually having the character spread wider is fine by me

I wouldn't like your first option though because it makes the game more "complicated" compare to it's easy flow at the moment

Having formations is nice. It would be even nicer to have control groups. Having to link/unlink every time is just annoying, even with formations. How hard would it be for the devs to implement control groups?

Even just making the default formation a little wider would help. But at the same time I often find my characters re positioning at the start of combat to go in a worse position than they were originally standing.

Maybe just giving character some 0 AP movement on the first turn? Even just 2-3m. Maybe depends on wits or initiative (1 initiative = .1 free movement perhaps).

Having to unlink to position properly is just an annoyance. Why would you do something so extreme as giving free movement to balance this? To solve this annoyance all Larian has to do is add a feature that lets me select which characters I want to assign to a control group and simply press the control group hotkey whenever I want to use that specific group. How hard can that be to implement?

I feel alot of the party wipes I had when I made my first character could have been avoided if I could better control my party's formation outside of combat.

Why were combat formations removed ? This is obviously an issue I'm finding since I found this thread via searching for how to set the formation ....
