I loved Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition, but the one thing that completely destroyed the game for me was finding out how broken grenades were. All you needed was one perk to maximize their effectiveness and they were super powerful and easy to find materials for. Even on hard mode it made all the enemies a joke.
Is this the case in Divinity Original Sin 2 as well? I wanted to know before buying it in early access.

While they were stupid good in D:OS1 early game, they became pretty mediocre as the game progressed because their damage and status application chances didn't scale much (if I recall correctly). Feels like it could be a similar story in D:OS2, though grenades will remain excellent finishers with how armor works. Changes to the armor system could have big effects on grenade power, so it's hard to say how they'll balance out.

From what I have seen they are 100% accurate. I suspect that means they have not put much balance in for them yet. But I would be lying to say I thoroughly tested it. I spend more time trying to control surfaces than creating them, but in general, even in the early game I do not see them game breaking yet. Especially since you need to chew through magical/physical armor first before they are effective.

There are several reasons why I say we need to be able to test out the second chapter.
Since currently the idea of the balance is overwhelmingly based in the early game... which is very much not representative of the entire game.
Which currently stumps a LOT of the conversations. Ignoring that some people don't know how to play the game and consider anything they use badly as "bad" (See ANY conversation on Necromancy and watch as people bemoan how "bad" two of the most powerful spells in the game are)... There are quite a few aspects we don't know about that are important for knowing the game's real balance.

Grenades are flat out garbage. I avoid them like the plague and only sell them for gold. Why?
- The enemy will ALWAYS go first, excluding character building pure wit. And ALL enemies run up and hug your butt in melee. - You will never have a good spot to use grenades in D:OS2. - The armor system in D:OS2 makes grenades worthless. Enemies will always have more armor and magical armor than you in almost every situation, meaning you have to strip that off first before the grenade can even do anything. By then, the use of the grenade as CC is pointless because almost every non-grenade move in the game can apply the debuff without screwing over your entire party. - Grenades screw over your entire party. - Grenades have huge radii, meaning they will always put massive AoE debuffs on the ground. But you know what also does that? Barrels. Carry some around.
Conclusion? You are literally throwing money away if you use grenades. They are AoE, Weaker versions of spells. If you know what to expect from your enemy, you can counter their grenades or flat out steal them before they use them.

Thank you for this fantastic news, grenades ruined the game balance for me so I'm happy they aren't godly as they were in the first game. Time to purchase Divinity Original Sin 2!

They are not garbage. They work moderately well now, but only after you remove magic or physical armor from enemies. Depends on the kind of grenade and your build.
They are useful in a pinch, or when you ran out of other moves, to soften up enemy armor or deal damage and effects when they are out of armor. There isnt many to be found, those and the ones you craft can sell reasonably well if nothing else. Better one grenade than lugging around twenty buckets.
And thats about as it should be in a fantasy game of this kind.

I will say this: If you want to use grenades, the Chemical Warfare Grenades should be your highest priority, along with Terror Grenades. CWG = (Intestines + Grenade Case)

You can just don't use grenades if you find them so op, like me. And not just grenades special arrows as well. Well at least in early game, but in mid and especially late game mages become op. Hail strike, meteor and mass heal are op and summons.

I think smoke grenades are pretty good, but they are very rare, considering it's not as easy to create smoke compare to previous game, I couldn't find one when I needed one, there are no crafting recipe for it currently either, other than that, the stun grenade last for 2 turns, 1 turn longer than the regular stun you get from skills.
