Pardon the trollike subject line. But this game is very unbalanced.

Why do I find 2 axes in the very first dungeon that are not usable until I'm at least 15th level or so? They both need strength 65. I am now level 15 and my warrior's strength is about 50--if I maxed out sure I could have 65 strength but would never be able to hit or dodge.

Why are minor boss monsters almost impossible to kill? For example, try raiding an orc settlement. I can now butcher heavy orcs and most other kinds of orcs, but the big orc bosses can not only kill me, but just one can kill every single one of the guards on the entire map as well--I've led one on a tour and he had a great time! One hit, and I'm pretty much done.

What's with "hit and run" being the only tactic that works? It's no fun playing an epic warrior who has to pick off the bad guys from a distance, run away, shoot some more, etc. All the while there is a line of orcs or skeletons following me around the map like a tank blitz in command and conquer. I sometimes feel like I'm in Warcraft-world but I'm the only unit on the map.

What's with the overpowered boss attacks and the player's lack of hitpoints? I have a low constitution because I wanted to use bigger weapons, but my vitality is only like 150, which would allow *me* to kill *me* in only 2 hits. I sit there and do hundreds of points of damage to some monsters and their life bar is still nearly maxed out.

Hmmm...I'm gonna go back to Morrowind...I really *want* to like this game, the graphics, music, and detail, but it's so ANNOYING. Do Europeans like to torture themselves? For some reason it's always European games whose difficulty is so unbalanced...

Many items are purely randomly placed. If you play the game a second or third time, you'll find different things - if any. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Also, remember that the more you travel from Aleroth away, the stronger the oppenents become. This as a general rule.

It seems to me as if you've travelled too fast into too difficult areas.

When you find a big kettle of crazy, it's best not to stir it.

Eh, no offense, but my first time through was an absolute cakewalk (FYI, I'm Asian). Maybe because I played a mage. *shrugs*

Yes, it seems that you're going waaay too far and too fast. Level up some and try those orcs later; I tackled them when my warrior character was level 25 or higher.

Have you thought about selling them off at a profit? Those things could very well set you up with thousands of goldpieces to get the game underway.

Two things:
1)learn to play the game. My first experience, taking a fledgeling mage down into the catacombs was exactly like yours. I was getting my [nocando] whopped. I had to hit and run, hit and run. The second trial, I did much better. The third time I ran a character I never had to run at all: those guys were dead before they knew what hit them!
2) as for those killing machine orcs: did you read the hints and tips that display while loading? If an area is too hard for you, go some place else!
There have to be areas in the game where level 35 characters still meet a challenge. Often this happens in crpgs in the way that you delve deeper and deeper into a dungeon - here it's all on one flat map. So it goes.

I can still remember the day when I was playing Might and Magic 3, and I accidentally landed on an island inhabited by minotaurs. (one of the toughest monsters in M&M3). They ground my party into a thin paste and had them on toast.

You'll get those hitpoints if you persist, don't worry. Once you've levelled up a few times you'll take those guys down with 10 strokes of your mighty sword.

... use your common sense. if it takes a long time to get there from aleroth, you'll probably get your [nocando] kicked until lvl 15 up

Thanks you all for your feedback.

Some people seem to think that I'm unable to kill orcs at all...that's not true. I can slice and dice them with the best of them, killing many of the lesser orcs. It is when the big boys (the giant orcs) come out that I get toasted. It seems strange to me to put a monster who seems to be roughly equivalent to Asmodeus in classic AD&D alongside a bunch of cardboard foes.

Ok--so my strategy so far has been to explore around a lot, maybe that's my problem. I went from the starting town to the dwarven bread inn to the castle to the captain and then decided to wander. I can kill all of the snakes, bees, corpses, trolls, etc,. but it's those big baddies that get me.

Re: my comment about Europeans, rereading it today it looks like it could be offensive, but I meant it as a joke, it's just most of the games that I've met nearly impossible obstacles have been European.

I did pretty much the same thing, but went back and cleared the orcs around Aleroth. For the giant orcs I had to retreat a bit if there were other orcs around, so I could take them out a few at a time, but even alone I needed a few potions. I stopped exploring south, and went north east (easier) and north west of the area east of the river (easier with a ranged attack, a little tougher with melee, though Spell Shield can help out with the poison attacks). I tried south west first, but the troll kings were tougher than the giant orcs. A few more levels and better equipment, and they were no longer a problem.
