I have to wonder why it is that the race itself, and not just the origin character, isn't being added in the last pre-release update. How are we meant to give feedback on it that can actually be meaningfully changed once the game has been released and save compatibility is a must-have?

I personally would really like a chance to test the race before the full release of the game.

The only real reason I can see for them not releasing the undead race before the full release is that maybe it has a free talent like Spirit Sight that they don't want us getting our hands on until release, but even then...

Good question. I'd love to test it myself, too. Also interested in why s/he is not present on the loading screen. Though Beast was only added once he was seen ingame, even if not playable atm.
What are your expectations or ideas for the race?

Well, we have one undead npc, don't remember his name, but you meet him as soon as you cross draw bridge leading out of Fort Joy.

As for undead as playable race, they will probably look like skeletons, and you will be able to pick up from what race your char was when he/she was alive. That is why, i think, undead is absent from the game's art, since you can be undead from one of the 5 races, who they will draw?
From what i understand undead will be able to conceal their condition, kind of like worgen in wow, but when combat starts it will fade. But it is my speculation.

Personally, i am more interested in the undead origin itself, since it was written by Chris Avellone.

Beast was on one of the older loading screens, as is presumably the undead character, as well as the four we're now familiar with. Though the appearance of those we now have has changed somewhat, so it may not be especially representative.

Perhaps they're not done with them yet and Its too early to give feedback on?
I'm not completely sure, but I think they added "combat noises" for some undead/skeletal npc's in the latest update. Might have been in for a while, but It could be a clue that they are being worked on.

Personally I hope the undead race has some kind of reversed interaction with bless/curse - debuffs (not damage) from bless, buffs or healing from curse.

Otherwise I think they're probably just going to have the disguise and hopefully not necessarily have the zombie condition (So you have to TAKE zombie to be healed by poison and hurt by regular healing.)

But I have nothing solid to go off of, since not all undead in-game have any set traits that I can tell.

Potential spoilers ahead for the undead race and shaper mask abilities (via digging through files), so skip this if you don't want to have some info possibly spoiled.

Also, if this is against the rules or some-such, let me know! I'll remove this post. opa

(Minor Ability Spoilers)
Digging around in the files, there's some skillsets for the undead race(s):

Code
	new skillset "Race_Undead_Dwarf"
	add skill "Shout_PlayDead"
	add skill "Shout_Undead_PolymorphIntoDwarf"

	new skillset "Race_Undead_Elf"
	add skill "Shout_PlayDead"
	add skill "Shout_Undead_PolymorphIntoElf"

	new skillset "Race_Undead_Lizard"
	add skill "Shout_PlayDead"
	add skill "Shout_Undead_PolymorphIntoLizard"

	new skillset "Race_Undead_Human"
	add skill "Shout_PlayDead"
	add skill "Shout_Undead_PolymorphIntoHuman"

Judging from that, it seems that you'll pick a pre-undead race, and as undead, you'll be able to polymorph into a "living" form, so people don't attack you on sight.

The Play Dead ability works, and is pretty hilarious - You pretend to die, and enemies end combat with you. Even if you've angered them enough to make them attack you, they cease combat and won't attack you again until provoked (on the normal NPCs that is). I didn't test it against regular enemies.

There's also an "UNDEAD" tag, with the description:

Quote
Source addicts pining for a Utopian future, the Undead are apex predators who move amongst the other races unseen.

Another thing to note: You can add the shaper mask to your inventory with some file tweaks as well, and it grants these abilities:

Code
Shout_PolymorphIntoHuman
Shout_PolymorphIntoDwarf
Shout_PolymorphIntoLizard
Shout_PolymorphIntoElf

With the mask, you can transform into any of the 4 races. You gain their talents and abilities when you switch as well. Taking the mask off resets you back to your actual race.

So that's probably how it'll go for the undead race at release, ability-wise. No idea what talents they may have, or what the story is. The shaper mask is also really cool. I'm looking forward to obtaining that.

Guess one of those masks is what Gratiana has on and Wendigo but hers is broken.

Altering the way buffs and debuffs work, and the way healing works means that the Undead will not play well in a party with non-undead. That strikes me like it would be an incredibly poor design decision for a party-based game.

I see it like this ; most buffs are single-person or affect surfaces. IT'd require you be a little more tactical than just "BLESS THE FIRE GET SICK HEALING" in that you'd add "Unless Trace the skeleman is in there, in which case wait for him not to be." but then said skeleman could run into the cursed blood and get a buff, or whatever.
