Please don't give undead that shapeshifting into a different race gives that race's skills. Makes other races much less unique!

I agree with this. I don't see why wearing another race's face via an artifact mask or whatnot would automatically infuse them with the innate ability of that race. Has this actually been confirmed to be the case? I as under the assumption that they only stole the faces to change appearance, making it easier for them to blend in where they'd otherwise be shunned.

Edit: Wasn't it stated in the video to simply be a glamour and nothing more?

Someone in the other thread it was confirmed they get it on the Dev stream.

I didn't watch it due to spoilers on other things and story spoilers. Didn't even wanna watch the Undead reveal (didnt watch origin tho) but i did so i can just share my thoughts on the race and etc.

Unless I somehow missed it he doesn't talk about the racial abilities. He says that the visual change to the undead model is glamour and purely cosmetic. You'll look like one of the other races and you'll be presented with that race's respective dialogue options, but you'll still take damage from healing spells etc.

If you look at the skill bar in the video, you can see the skills of other races appear when he shapeshifts into them :P

Honestly, it seems pretty ridiculous, both gameplay wise and logic wise. As if most of the races not having very good racial abilities to begin with wasn't bad enough, the undead/shapeshifting mask user being able to gain any of them further devalues the races.

If anything, they should lack those abilities and general knowledge should serve to raise redflags and arouse suspicion of the undead/mask user.

I agree Hades in the sense that I try not to be spoiled by watching anymore than I have to, but I do my best to watch all of the videos they release outside of streams, since I love hearing about the new information when it comes to races. That said if this is really the case, then that's a bit disappointing. It does take a lot away from the other races in the sense that their race-specific abilities are shared, making them even less useful in a party of mixed undead and living.

I do hope they rethink this, and that these video only showcase an early build of how this mechanic works. Aside from that though, I enjoy everything else I've heard about the undead race.

I feel more amd more like undead is really meant for a new experience on a second play through.

Probably worth watching the VOD of the live stream as they explain it and show it in action (starting around 1:38:30 is a good place to start for mask discussion). The biggest point is that the mask grants you the races skills and abilities AND can be used by anyone, not just undead.

Key points:
- Knowledge of how to make the mask comes from Fane, so it appears you have to do a bit of his story to get access to it.
- Mask is made through a crafting recipe
- Requires getting a special tool to steal faces (found on or around the torture in fort joy)
- You have to steal the face from a fresh and intact corpse (on the stream they accidentally turned the first dwarf they murdered into ash and so had to kill another)
- You have to steal a face from each race to unlock that races shapeshift
- You can make the mask without having collected all the faces (but will only work for the ones you have so far - on stream they only stole a dwarf face and made a dwarven mask of shapeshiffting)
- ANY character can use the mask (not just Fane as PC or companion, not just custom undead). This may have been stated in the chat only. VOD @ about 1:42:00 - 1:42:20
- When you choose your race with the mask you gain access to that races racial traits (e.g. corpse eater for elf) and class skills (e.g. Metamorph for dwarf, see this example on the livestream)
- Characters will treat you as the race you are.

I think the purpose of the mask is to ensure that you can access more of the games content with a single playthrough, whether that means being able to not terrify people as undead or not miss out on corpse granted skills if you don't have an elf in the party, or access quest lines that are gated behind races.

Opposite of what a lot of people have said in the thread, the mask means you aren't forced to play or include any race in your party comp. Instead, it opens up more freedom.

Here is the VOD of the livestream for reference: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/171233930

[Edit: for clarity, cut some erroneous examples from alpha that may not be in game anymore, and link to VOD]

Personally I'm not too sure what to make of the mask, personally I feel like it ruins the entire idea of having multiple races in the first place.

That KS update is pretty much the one I feared so much... and my faith for the game just sank to my boots... frown

Seeing where they put their attention at and what they ignore... breaks my heart.

And finally that undead origin story... "oh, so old, super eternal race lonesome rider guy"... is that really all creativity a so much hailed writer like Mr. Avellone can administer?
I hope some of the Larian writers can breath at least a bare minimum of life (...) into that story.

So yeah, I also wish that at least the skills would be forbidden.

Just a bit disappointed.

1) Mask giving racial skills - game breaking and nonsense.
2) Mask shared with living characters - nonsense unless they are chaotic evil. Rimworld elaborated on this well.
3) Play dead - would be nice for DOS1, but inconsistent with a more serious atmosphere of DOS2. At least in the way it was depicted in the video. I can imagine an undead ambushing patrolling guards with this skill, but this seem to be a rare case. Fainting on the battlefield is just weird and unconvincing.
4) Lockpicking with fingers - nonsense.
5) Why would poison heal skeletons?
