my question is what benefit do you get by wearing all the armour peices as a whole? i have them all but what if i used different gloves with it - would it lower the strength of the rest of the of the armour?

The first time you wear the full dragon set you get some experience points, learn a level of Elemental Strike, and Bless (temporary effect) is cast on you. There are no bonuses for continuing to wear the full set, so feel free to wear it once and then swap gloves.
