I have been having problems with portraits in the GM mode. I am creating custom characters in the editor, but I cannot figure out how to create custom portraits for them: my newly created characters' portraits are always linked to whichever root template I copied initially to create my new character. I'm not sure how to change the "Icon" line in the properties window (or what to change it to) or if the portraits are maybe somehow linked to the "Portrait Generation Trigger" line.

When I generate the portraits, have I created a new file, form or template somewhere that I can use when assigning portraits? Or should it just work like magic or something? Thanks for the help.

After you generate the portraits, all portraits for characters in the current mod should indeed automatically update (unless they have a pre-made icon from the icon atlas assigned).

So I deleted the "Icon" line in the properties window and the "Portrait Generation Trigger" line. I set my photobooth level to the custom level I made (it's just a blank level at this point) but still no portraits. When I select my custom NPC in the GM mode the portrait is blank.

At least it's not the old guy that it once was, but still. I appreciate the help and am positive that I am just doing something wrong at this point.
