When he gave me all of his gold there was extra string of text added in.

Actually I think he doesn't give any gold in this case.

If you chose 1 GP it says "[1]" at the end of the text and you get 1 GP, for half it says "[20]" and you get 20 GP, if you chose all it says "[(long GUID as above)]" you get nothing.
