Please add them back and nerf individual runes if necessary.
They add to build variety and it would make sense if divine gear had more rune slots than legendary gear etc, so that there is some concrete difference between gear tiers.
You've added a new rune system which was a lot of work but will have minimal impact on gameplay with rune slots being scarce
