Am I an idiot or is some very basic instructions missing?

For example, I'm following the tutorial on modifying a skill and it helpfully says to add it to your sandbox level to test...

Okay, look up guide on creating and opening sandbox...done.

Look for how to add characters or interact with sandbox in any normal fashion to pretend like it's the active game...yeah, nothing.

Am I just blind?

If you're in the sandbox level (or any level) you can activate game mode by clicking the controller icon on the top left corner under file.

If that's not the problem, you can add a new root template from the root template panel. Near the top of that panel you should see a red man icon, right click it to show only character root templates.

Pick one you want to use, place it on the level using the place tool (+sign looking button on the left bar).

Then click on your newly placed character and look on the side bar (right side). Scroll to about midway down the side bar and you'll see a line called "Player". Check yes.

Now if you turn on game mode (top left button mentioned earlier) you should be able to walk around with that character.

Thank you! That worked.

Is there an easy way to create a character in sandbox with skillpoints so I can learn and test my new skills?

The easiest thing to do would be to use an existing stat file that has the ability you need.

So on a character you have placed that's set to player in the side bar, go down to the Stats entry. I suggest using the arena stat entries for testing. When you click the stats bar a little search bar will show up, just type arena in there and one of them probably fits unless you're trying to make a super high end skill.

If none of them obviously work (wizard, ranger , whatever) then you can make your own stat entry really quick in the stats editor. If you need help with the stats editor I can probably point you in the right direction but that's not my best area.

Ended up having to make my own because setting the stats didn't seem to give them any points in any skills.

Thank you so much for helping.

Incidentally, is this info actually found anywhere and I just wasn't looking in the right place?

Tutorials are still kinda WIP:

There's the "build a basic quest" video tutorial series as well that Windmere is doing good work on so I don't have to :P

A lot of the finer tips you can gather by watching him move around the editor a bit.

This is actually a pretty huge blocker. The sandbox is completely unusable for testing mods at this point (presumably it's only purpose). Every time I load it up I'd have to put in a new model with custom stats in order to test a tweak to a skill. I guess I'll try to work around it, but it seems a bit like a bug.

Hi treebird,

The sandbox is indeed a testing environment which you will not be able to modify directly. You can create a copy of the sandbox level if you want to be able to save your changes.

You can also give skills/exp to your character using ReCon which you can open in the editor with ctrl+shift+F11.
