Playing as a scoundrel (human/female) it feels like strenght/intelligence gear looks much better and also has more variety than finesse gear.

The only new thing I have gotten appeareance wise in 50 hours of play time has been a different helmet around level 10-ish and the same level 1 armor except with a cape.

There has been about 3 different looking sets of armor for intelligence and strenght character's each in vendors so far, not mentioning uniques. And yet I am still wearing the same level 1 looking armor at lvl17 (that looks awfully heavy-warrior type btw) with an ever so slightly colour change, will I ever get a new outfit or do rogue archetypes just got the short stick in development?

It's a bit silly when the whole party looks like they could kick any mighty creature's ass while scoundrels look like they might be a match for a petty bandit on a good day.

Well, as a rogue/scoundrel player myself, I have to say that that's what you are yourself, so don't expect to look any different. Even if it isn't, it may just be a clever diguise to give your enemies a false sense of security...

Just kidding. I'm playing Sebille (the elf origin) as my rogue, and I have to say that by around level 12+, her gear started to look pretty epic. (Human) Ifan, who is also specced mainly into FIN, looks pretty much the same as always, just with a few more mail bits instead of the leather he had earlier, so I tend to agree with your observation. I have to admit though that my perception is a bit selective. I care a lot more more about the look of Sebille's armor than Ifan's wink

I know that the tactical players will disagree with my approach, but I've tended to scratch around for equipment with added strength & intelligence attributes so I can equip characters with armour out of their normal class. No particular overall "vision" of how they should look, just whatever I feel like at the time, but it's nice to have the choice.

Armour appearance is very weird all in all. In the character creation you get some quite neat looks that are not a good representation on how you will play that game at all. And while playing a few things don't make much sense.

Class looks that make no sense:

- Battle Mage, Enchanter = can only get that look in Fort Joy, after that I have seen any drops and merchants stop selling it
- Wayfarer (pants), Inquisitor, Lohse (pants) = alternative leather armour that I haven't seen in the game
- Wayfarer (top), Lohse (top) = weak cloth type armor, that no one would ever use
- Metamorph = Class skill scale with strength, but uses a spear which scales with finesse
- Conjuror = Uses shield which requires constitution, chain armour which requires finesse and a wand that requires intelligence. No idea what a finesse based armour is actually doing there.

Things that bother me about armour appearance in game:

- Alternative leather armour seems to be unavailable
- Chain armour scales with finesse, but has a bulky fighter look
- Tribal themed mage armour is not available after Fort Joy
- Normal cloth clothing is completely useless, due to have low/no armour points

Now maybe some of these can be fixed by crafting? But I haven't seen more then very basic armour crafting so far. And even if there is some way to craft some good armour with the appearance you want, since level scaling is so very important I doubt you can keep up with your preferred look for any significant part of the game.

/edit
Well then... it seems the "leather" armor in the character creator was the 3rd mage armor......
So yes nice.. finesse gets bulky leather and bulky chain.. and intelligence gets a much better leather armor.

From an Art direction perspective humans in this game just look all kinds of wrong to me. Currently they look silly just standing there pushing their bellies out, it doesn't look so bad when they're naked but once they put armor on it looks like they all have pot bellies and are incapable of correct posture. All of their armor is bulky and baggy too, making them look fat when equipped with it.

Elves, Lizards and Dwarves look much better in comparison and have way more unique armor styles.

This is what I've gathered as well so far. I use Fane just to test out an armors on each race and humans will nearly always have worst looking version.

I really wish the npc gears don't all use the same look. The lizard tribe garment is my favourite mage costume but I'm stuck always using the same derp mage robe if I update my gears. You have to be doing quest and using unique stuffs for the lizard tribe looks.

Yup, humans are the worst. I have two elves and two humans in my party and the humans are always quite ashamed by their bad look. They overcompensate by mocking the elves for showing naked skin, althought they actually liked to do the same. grin

The only innovative human armor is the low level tribal mage stuff. Never saw it again after Act 1 however. Ok-ish is the heavy Knight-like armor (until you get to the higher level ridiculously stupid small helmet). Except that it is fat-and-stuffy for humans.

I wish there was a "style" menu type thing.

If you have played DC Universe Online, you know what I'm talking about. Basically gears have their own "style", a unique appearance. Once you wear that gear, that style is unlocked (it works with wearing bc its a MMO and there are tons of styles and gear pieces). But basically, now you have that style unlocked, lets say for gloves, now you can go into the style menu and just equip that style and lock it in and you can wear better gear that might not look as good or you don't like the appearance.

I don't know if equipping to get the "style" would be a better fit for a game like DOS, but it is something that can be done. Honestly this should be in every single RPG really.

It's sort of a pity, it's clear there is a decent variety of armor sets in game, and that a lot of work was put into making them, but after fort joy the vendors only sell one set per attribute, and if you do find something unique you can only wear it for a level or two before you have to replace it due to stat inflation.
