Seven Eastern European countries have formally joined NATO. The new 26-nation alliance will now extend its military protection to Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

It finally happened. Estonia is full member of NATO. Estonians are very happy with that as they see it as protection against any threats from Russia.

I hope this will add to the overall protection against terrorism.

Congratulations Egin!

I believe that this could prove very important to your country. But beware, you will be protected, but you also might become a target as you join a USA based allience...

Dear Bernhard. There is a lot of tention already.
There is a lot of tention goin lately between USA and Germany/France. The most noticeable conflict started in April 2003 when USA decided to go to Iraq.
NATO is too unballanced now, there is no secret that, newrly added countries have no military potential and NATO needs troops to carry out it's peacekeeping missions around the world. USA needs Italy and it needs Turkey to be able to counterpart Germany and France in Europe.

There is tention between NATO and Russia. The problem is that Russia has no concrete policy towards NATO, and newrly elected for second four years season V. Putin is experiencing much tention from one part allying with NATO, and this is expected by mayor investors to Russian market and from other part aggressive behaviour demanded by pro-nationalists parties.

And sure, there is much US involvement and interest towards oil domination. Grusia and Ukrain are waiting for the next wave of NATO expansion. Evidently Russia and US are pushing EU from oil scene.

Sorry, I wanted to be short but I see I can write more and more. It is time to stop now. Hope, everything will be fine.

Ahh, you mean our troops. Yes, we have our troops in Kosovo, we have sent demolition men to Afganistan and we have our soldiers in Iraq. But also we have 4 NATO interceptor planes patrolling our airspace, what is good in the circumstances where Russia has been entering our borders with their war planes threee times during the last two years already.

Glad you're happy about that, Egin
Well, if more countries join, maybe Germany could sneak out of the NATO unnoticed. Don't worry, my opinion is that of a minor minority. I'd prefer neutrality instead of watching this tug-o-war about controversial interests - each cooking their own power soup.

I wish for a real peaceful international organisation...

Exactly Kiya. And not being America's puppet.....

Womble, I think the word puppet is not aapropriate here. Staying out of NATO will not make your country less *puppet* than mine.
US has it's own -World domination plan- and it will be moving towards it regardless of UN, EU, OSCE etc.

And Womble, who is nowadays not affected by US? France criticised US involvment in Iraq and lost quite a good percentage of it's export. It was slapped by US. Is France a puppet? But, it greatly depends from the States.

And it is military alliance. For estonians being a member of NATO gives some protection from Russia. But, it can be illusion, as in a conflict of interest large countries look for the solution for the sake of smaller one's. As it is in Kosovo.
So, if there will be conflict between US and Russia it possible that it will be solved by trading Baltic States, as it was done in 1939 between USSR and Germany.

I have read some scintific articles written by Russian academic economists. They think that there is much probability that NATO will collapse in about eight years. It will happend after Ukrain and Grusia join it. Even now there are too many interests in NATO as there are too many different countries.

I fully agree Egin. Don't make it right though. America has its grubby little fingers everywhere and it bugs the hell out of me.

Yes matey, and more of that. How long will it take for Russia to become strong again, how long will it take for China (it is now one of the most successfully growing economies in the world today) so, how long will it take for China to come and force to be listened. India, if I am not mistaken is a nuclear empire now.

This will change or human race will destroy itself. When there will be another answer to a question: What is the main factor that makes a country strong?
Now, still the same - military force.

Indeed. The main thing as always is 'my gun is bigger than yours'. When politicians realise this is not a global 'pissing competition' and cooperate to relieve poverty, sickness and the destruction of the environment the world will be a much better place. Or monkeys might fly outta my backside first. My betting's on the monkeys so far.

Dear Womble.
You say - When politicians realise this is not a global 'pissing competition'-

Sorry mate, but this seems to be the essence of politics.

Politics - definition
Competition for power and leadership between competing interests or groups. May be characterized by artful and sometimes dishonest practices.

It is politicians job to make country be stronger, have more influence. Economics are tricky. Not all politicians are economically strong, take Mr. Bush for example, His ratings were falling as he is weak economist doing almost nothing in this sphere.
Is there anything that can rocket president's rating fast and make a country look powerful and influental?

Sadly, but hell yes, and it is - short and successful WAR.

Why this doesn't work for Bush this time, because, it is not short. (if it is successful is also question with no concrete yes). But still it is so called -armed diplomacy- and going back to your post about puppets, today there is no country or alliance of countries (UN for example) that is able to say -NO- to the United States.
