Ok Divine Divinity has been recommended to me by friends, magazines, online web sites so i have finally decided to see what all the fuss is about, however an unfortunate dilemma has come up i can choose to get divine divinity or Baldurs Gate II. I loved the original Baldurs Gate so i am really tempted to just give DD a miss and continue with the old (and tired) dungeons and dragons based rpg if simply to see where the story goes next. But i am still unsure and what i am asking you to do is tell me why i should get DivDiv rather than BGII. I know absolutely nothing about it and although i have high hopes i am not sure i want to chance buying a game that could turn out to be nothing more than some silly retro gamers idea of a good rpg. I mean i loved ultima, and i currently like Morrowind and KOTOR, how does DivDiv compare?

I have not played Baldurs Gate, but there are discussions of various games in the RPG Chat forum that might give you a better idea of how they compare. There is a demo for Divinity (at Fileplanet.com and probably other places), though it is a bit large at 400MB. The beginning of the game (what the demo covers) is a little heavy on the hack-and-slash, but it would give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. The full game has more elaborate quests, but the demo has the same style and sense of humour. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know if the actual combat is any good, i've heard that it's the fairly standard hack and slash affair, with no strategy involved, i hope not.
I am also wondering about the plot because i know that fantasy plots tend to be cheesy and cliched, if it has a sense of humour though then that might be enough.

Divinity is often said to be a mix of Diablo and Baldur's Gate, with a little of Ultima. I own both Baldur's Gate games and I don't particularly like the D&D style, although the story was enough to keep me playing. The combat in Divinity is much more Diablo-like. I'm advising you to buy Divinity in instead of BG2, for the new experience. It won't be a disappointing one. Just make sure you patch the game first thing. The plot is fun, maybe a little trite, (hero transforms from a nobody into the chosen one, saves the world from dark forces, fights dragons and orcs, with a wise old wizard that helps out, etc.) But the graphics and music are superior to BG, as well as the humor and world interactivity.

I've played both. BGII has been played and uninstalled.....DD is still installed and going and going and going and going strong. That's MHO, and that's all I know to say.

Ok i am pretty much convinced, and i have asked for the game for my birthday (only 9 days away) yey.
I played the demo on recommendation (actually found it on an old magazine cover disk) and it seems very good although i wish i could try out the mage and survivor character classes. The graphics are suitably detailed, and i was almost fooled that the character sprites were 3d models. Really disliked the voice acting though, but i cant say that it really puts me off enough to not get the game. The music was superb however (how do to sound departments get things so wrong and yet another gets it so right?), suitably classical and fantasy film esque.
I am a little worried about the patch comment... is the game seriously bugged then? Is it really necessary to download the patch and what kind of size is it.
I am glad that someone mentioned that its still on their hard drive, currently i am having trouble getting ingrossed in some games, their either over to quickly or not worth playing again... heres hoping that has the lastability of 'X2 the threat.'

The patch is 10.3MB. The game is not seriously bugged, but some people have run into serious bugs. I played the game half way through without it and didn't have any significant problems. Some of the fixes and changes are only applicable to new games, though. There are additional quicksaves added by the patch (to give you 2 by default), the inventory of a certain NPC was improved and various other fixes/improvements. As with any game, I'd recommend installing the patch before starting to play. You will not have a problem with Divinity being over too quick. It should take about 60 to 100+ hours, depending on whether you do all the side quests and how much you explore.

you won't be sorry pinger. DD is honestly an outstanding rpg. i WILL say though, that BGII was great as well. BG requires more micro-management however, as you're (probably) running more characters. also, i enjoyed BG more playing with my brother (each running 3 characters) than in single-player mode. BG is meant to be shared (much like NWN). DD is solo. for me, and my style of prefered play, DD beats both diablo, both BG, NWN, morrow and arx. all good games. this is simply the best. enjoy!

Ok i've played through the demo which was surprisingly big to say the least.
Loved some of the humour, the skeletons with too much 'existential thought' really cracked me up. Thing that most impresses me above all however was the absolutely stunning level of interactivity between you and the game world, harking back to good old ultima but in some ways even more advanced. The ai isnt half bad for an rpg either.
I think i am going to love this game and now i am just counting down the days till my 18th. As i have a bit of time on my hands what character class would you recommend for someone reasonably experienced with the whole rpg thing? I didnt really get a good taste of what to expect from anything other than the warrior.

Any class can learn any of the skills, and wear any equipment they have the requirements for. It all depends on your playing style. differences between classes (minor spoilers) secondary stat calculations Early Starter Tips (NON-Spoiler Version) (contains much of the information in the above topic). [color:"orange"]Thing that most impresses me above all however was the absolutely stunning level of interactivity between you and the game world[/color] That is one of the things what turned me off the Sacred demo. There were all kinds of chests and sacks around, with few of them more than background. While exploring a building, I found 6 candles at the points of a large pentagram, and automatically tried to light them to see if that might just trigger something, without success.

I've played both games. While BG2 is great, Divine Divinty is....well, home. The absolutely most astounding game I have ever played. I judge all other games by how they compare with DD!

1 more day till i get the game and just wanted to inform you all that all my problems have been solved. My brother got BG2 and i am playing that over a LAN with him, so i didnt really need to make a decision anyway.
Wish me a happy birthday tomorrow (if your bothered )
