That guy was supposed to be the leader, hero and protector of the Seekers. The first thing they ask me after entering the Sanctuary is to search and bring him back. After escaping Fort Joy Island we can see him scolding Malady for not showing proper respect for the ones who fell in Lady Vengeance's takeover.
Yet, in the aftermath of Dallis attack when every single Seeker except the kid is dead, he cheerfully tells us about his plans to go home and meet his parents. Shouldn't he be crying in despair, having failed to those who counted on him to regain their freedom?
Hypocrital asshole, or bad writting?

Bad writting, because in rest of the game he has 0 impact and he is completely forgotten character later in game.

Feels like they changed writers for Gareth after act 1. He took a complete turn and then just disappeared from the story, despite actually being one of the very, very few likeable characters originally.
