Here's an idea as an alternative for the many chats we've been having among forummembers for so long now... *coughironycough*
Any Tetris lovers on board? It's one of the first games I've actually played a LOT a long time ago, in the early days of the Gameboy. I still love it, especially the two-player mode! So here's the deal:
Go to
www.tetrinet.org. Choose [Downloads]. On this page click on "Tetrinet Client for windows". Then I suggest to download the middle link, the "Standard" game.
TetriNet is by default an advanced version of Tetris. Reading the readme file would be a good idea if you want to play this default game (it has "Special blocks" with which you can attack other players (up to 6 players in one game) or defend your own field). But you can play several versions of Tetris at TetriNet.
Personally I prefer the Classic ("pure") Tetris game, with few rules to keep it simple (and that way the game kind of depends a bit more on skill than luck -- The game is simpler without those blocks, but some people find it easier with them...)
Ok, the idea: we could get together and play against eachother in a special Larian room (or several larian rooms), and in the mean time have a little chat while we're at it.
If there's enough people who wanna give it a try, it might just become a lot of fun . Only problem is of course the time zones, which could make it hard to find an hour when most people are able to come online. But I suppose we can figure that out - the weekends are probably our best shots... We can agree on dates/hours in this thread.
So, in case this is gonna happen, here's the basic how-to-play (that is for a classic game).
[color:"orange"]
CONNECTING TO THE SERVERFirst go to the "Client Settings" screen and choose a nickname. Type "tetrinet.org" in the IP field. Then connect.
GOING TO A (LARIAN) ROOMWe'll just be creating our very own Larian room(s), which you can do by going to the "Partyline" screen, and typing
/join #larian. If somebody already has created that room, you'll just join the room - otherwise you'll create it automatically. If the room is already full, you unfortunately won't be able to join until somebody leaves, but you can always create a #larian2 room and wait for somebody else to play.
You can see a list of available rooms (and the players that are in the rooms) by typing
/whoSTART NEW GAMETo play, the player with the * next to his/her name (usually player 1), can click the "Start New Game" button. This person is the moderator, and is the only one who can pause and stop a game as well. If the moderator seems asleep, player number 2 can also start a new game, by typing
/start.
PLAYINGAfter a game has finished, the play fields are always automatically closed (I haven't found a way to make it stop doing that, it's pretty annoying...). So you have to open this screen yourself by clicking "Show Fields".
Which keys to be used can be viewed (and changed) on the "Misc. Settings" screen.
CLASSIC MULTIPLAYER RULESI don't think any player or moderator can change the rules on an existing server (you can also create a server yourself and set the rules in the "Server Settings" screen - but I haven't been able to make that work ). Anyways, the games on the tetrinet.org server always seem to be classic games, so here are the few multiplayer rules:
If you clear TWO lines at once, all the other players will get ONE extra line on the bottom of their field.
Clear THREE lines at once, and the others will get TWO extra lines.
Clear FOUR lines (a "Tetris"), and the other will get FOUR extra lines.
The rest is basic Tetris rules: clear as many lines as you can, and try not to reach the top of the files or you lose. Whoever lasts the longest, wins the game.

That's it. As said earlier, you can play many different versions of Tetris at TetriNET - and if you'd rather play a game with the "Special blocks" included, I'm fine with that as well of course, but I'm not explaining the rules here
So... anyone? (Or did I just type all this in vain )
