To start off with, I am not an author/writer or anyone qualified to give an opinion on narrative and plot creation. With that being said however, I do want to give feedback on Lohse, who is my favourite character in the story of dos 2 and also my favourite character in any game I have played thus far, even going back to games like Baldur's Gate.
First off I would like to take my hat off to Larian for writing a really great character, I enjoy her personal story more than I enjoy the main story in the game and that says a lot, since I enjoy the main story line a great deal as well. You guys have done a great deal to make this character feel, to some extent, real. So props for that.
However, there are some things I think that could be done to take this character from being, "the best character I have had the pleasure of experiencing the story of in an rpg" to, "a true masterpiece," which is what I would like to comment on.
These changes would mainly influence when you travel with her as a companion and not when you play with Lohse as the main character (I have done both) since when you play with her as the main character a lot of her personality comes from the choices you as a player make.
The most important aspect of Lohse as a character is the fact that she is possessed, which means that both her and the presence possessing her can influence her actions. She as a character would be much more believable if this extended to more of her dialogue within the game. For example, if the following happened:
1) When you discuss with her in dialogues, you can earn influence with either her or the being possessing her via dialogue choices. This way, she essentially counts as 2 different characters. A, "good Lohse" and an, "evil Lohse," then depending on how you act throughout the story you can make 1 or the other a stronger presence within her.
2) In events like when you meet Sahelia at the start of the game and she attacks the Elf, you have the option of either egging her on to attack (to earn favour with the demon) or trying to stop her (to earn favour with her).
3) When you meet the demon hunter, instead of it being a case of you must just hunt down the demon, you should also have the option of trying to persuade her it is better if she keeps her demon. Maybe a dialogue along the lines of, "the voices inside your head are what have defined you as a person so far, do you really want to let them go?"
4) In the romance with Lohse scene, if your character has taken a path the demon doesn't like, or has been trying to help Lohse push back her demon, you have to pass a persuasion check for anything to happen or she has to like you beyond a certain threshold to resist the demon. Alternatively, if you have been strengthening the influence of the demon, it encourages her.
5) When you meet the demon in question, it should comment on your relationship with her. If the demon approves of you, it should encourage her to stay with you and she should have the option to takes its pact here. If the demon does not approve of you and she does not like you enough, the demon should encourage her to leave you and take the pact where you then need to pass a persuasion check to prevent it from happening, otherwise she sides with the demon and attacks you. If she likes you a lot and the demon disapproves of you, she should side with you by default and the story should progress the way it currently does at the moment.
Anyhow, that is my feedback on the story of what is currently my favourite character in an RPG. I know it is unlikely that at any point something like this would have been implemented, but it would have been great to see an even more fleshed out Lohse with interactions like these, at least from my perspective
