Dungeons and Dragons appears to be the most played game pen & paper game here as I've seen it mentioned all the time by various different people!

In my 10 year career playing rpgs I've actually never played it! And none of my group played it either. Nor did we have a desire too actually...

Our top 3 pen and paper games we played where:

Warhammer RPG
Middle-earth - (using the rolemaster rules)
Call of Cthulhu

We dabbled in a couple of others, but nothing worth a mention!

(A)D&D is not only the most known RPG system, but also the most widespread in computer games.

Does the term "product placement" ring a bell ?

I'd love to see other systems being used rather than d&d. I perfer systens based on a percentage from 0 to 100.

Every d&d rgp computer game I got comes with a manual an inch thick. The Fallout series and Wizardry 8 both had good systems that where easier to understand right from the start. But if you dont know the d&d system and play a game with based on it then it's not so easy to understand what's good and not good other than if it's a higher number it's better, but how much better?!?

I know the system now finally, but only in a computer environment, after playing TOEE.

But in TOEE I don't like the d&d system used in the game, though I like the game itself. I don't understand how in that game (if it's a d&d rule) how plate boots for example give the exact same armour bonus as leather but the only differece is the spell modifier! Why? Plate boots should offer more protection. Same goes for all the armour types in the game. The skill system is incredibly basic also. Only a small handful of skills and all classes have access to them but with different points costs of course, but only about 4 of all the skills are any use. Tumble, intimidate, and the thief skills. I do like the feats idea though!

Wizards of the coasts did a good job plugging the system since they bought it.

"ALL rpg's are based on the standard D&D rules."

Actually, to be completely accurate, let's give a tip of the hat to where D&D emanated from, the Tolkien books. Tolkien invented words like "troll" and "mithril", and, though not the first, the idea of an adventuring party in a fantasy world.

More than happy to give credit to tolkin:
AND
credit to Historians without we would have no;
Greek gods and heros, norse gods and heros,
ningas ( spelling is not my forte ): and a host
of villains and heros. i do have to slightly
agree with some who feel that D&D rules can be
very hard to understand. But the man who wields
a one handed axe (wt- 2lbs with a plus 1 hit point),
should wack the enemy carring a 10 lb sword twice
as fast as the enemy. But then how much strength,
stamina, any poison?, resistances, armor should
be taken into account? Preferably a computer can
be my dungeon master. The paper Dungeon Master
has to be extreamly good to track each player's
character. By the way have you seen The movie
A Knight's Tale? If you really want to ride a
horse and joust in the 14th century; that is as
close to the real thing as doing it!!
Before i had to retire; Chicago (usa) had the
first renassance fair ever. (1962?) I had the
chance to Joust. We used padded poles. Alot of
fun but it hurt like hell when you were unhorsed.

I hate games based on D&D. The old ones anyway. They were way too restrictive, and generally too freakin difficult. The Baldur's Gate series is one of the few D&D based games i like.

You forgot about many great games, this poll really is incomplete...

What about Fallout, IWD, Planescape, Morrowind, Gothic, Lionheart, Arcanum and many others?

With the invention and spreading of the D20 system, the rules get spread even further. D20 is - as far as I know - based on (A)D&D , and therefore the core remainsprobably the same.

If D20 weren't license-free, I would see a tendency towards monopolism.

I really wished there was more diversity.

By the way, many, many German gamers wished there would be more RPGs based on DSA, but FanPro failed in several cases (LMK, Armalion), but nowadays let DSA-based RPGs produced for cellular phones (aka "Handy" in German) which have Java included.

They should take a look at how TSR/Wizards get THEIR system so masively widespread !

Afaik D20 is based on D&D, whoch is the predecessor to AD&D...

And what tendency towards monopolism? There are plenty of other systems...dsa (tde in english), mers, gurps, and all the others...

I meant two things :

- C-RPGs (I don't know of ANY Shadowrun or GURPS-based C-RPG)

- The huge amount of players of (A)D&D world-wide - looking at local shops selling RPG stuff I can often see big shelves full with (A)D&D material, but fewer with other systems.

(This might be influenced by the massive dying of RPG-shops here arounnd me where I live (in Germany), at least here in Cologne and my own hometown there have several of such shops "gone out of business" ( I like that Euphemism). RPG material in shops still selling RPG-related stuff has been generally decreasing.)

There was a Shadowrun based game on the Super Nintento, and quite good it was too!! I still have it in PC form. Don't know of any others though.

Used to be tons of shops here too inculding Virgin Megastore and EB that all sold RPG books. Now there's one tiny shop called Sub-city hidden down some obscure street...

Oh the glory days...

Plowking, you've met failry good the sense what I mean with the "dying of RPG shops" - at least here in Germany.

One of the best RPGs? Actually I would answer Chrono Trigger. Great story, great time of playing, great game. Also like the Final Fantasy's. I still play D&D at my school having lot of fun. I like creating evil thief that kills his compagnons for money

Well, thats my opignon...

Dont know if these are RPGs but I got started of with The Hobbit on Commodore 64 (the game was on two cassette tapes, which failed to load 50 percent of the time).

Also
The Count for the VIC 20 machine. On cartridges.

Great fun hehe

Ah the old text-based adventure games...I remember them well. Played the hobbit on the spectrum, and played the lord of the rings too. Have them on an emulator.

Gandalf goes North
> Talk to Gandalf.
I don't see a Gandalf.
> Run.
Run where?
> Run anywhere.
Sorry I don't know how to do that.
> Run North
You fall and cleve your skull

Classic gaming or what!!!

Barf!!
I forgot to mention another great RPG. Birthright! by serria.. So
Buggy they don't support it. LOL The bugs were random (no crashes)
so it stayed in the possibility of magic is not an exact science.
I loved it. And it's so big i still play it.

...more nostalgia. Anybody remember the old Fighting Fantasy books, like The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Citadel of Chaos, House of Hell and City of Thieves?

...I reminisce

376
You stand at a junction. The passage left continues a couple of feet before it turns sharply north. The right passages ends in flight of stairs leading up. To go left (turn to 117). To go right up the stairs (turn to 34).

34
You go right and ascend the stairs. At the top there is a landing with door facing east. Do you open the door (turn to 311) or go back to the junction (turn to 23)

117
You follow the passage left. As the passage turns north, the floor beneath you crumbles and collapses. You fall into a deep chasm and die horribly, horribly. Rats make light work of your broken body. Your adventure is over.

Ah, good times when things were simple...
