Does this happen if you create a new profile, start a new game and try saving?

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs before starting the game, especially anti-virus and any backup programs that may be monitoring the My Documents folder?

Particularly for overwriting saves, backup or sync programs can cause this problem if they lock the original save.
A few people have had BitDefender block the game from being able to create files and folders, which has also caused this issue. In that case, including both the game executable and Larian Studios My Documents folder in BitDefender's trusted app and directory sections will fix the problem (Advance Threat Defense, Ransomware Protection / Safe Files, Application Access).

Try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition\LevelCache' folder and delete the contents. A corrupt file there can cause problems when saving or loading.

Try exiting out of the Steam client, if applicable, and starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and running as administrator.

Try creating a new Windows administrator user account (either with the My Documents in the default location, or on a different drive, if available), switch to that account and try starting the game from there, directly from the executable.

Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.

Same as original poster (as far as I can tell, from their decidedly *spartan* description).

I've a Steam copy of D:OS:EE that I've played for ~20 hours, perhaps four months ago, on the same computer upon which I'm attempting to play now:

i7 7700k
2x8GBs Corsair DDR4 PC 3000 RAM
nVidia GTX1080/8GBs (390.65 drivers)
Samsung 960 Pro, 1TB
Windows 10x64 Pro

all current, official, WHQL drivers;
no overclocking/overvolting

I've erased all my old save games (*all*: including quick saves, deliberate saves and auto saves) in the hopes of starting a fresh game.

Two new characters, new game...but the game crashes after each auto save or quick save.

I have attempted:

1. Steam File Verification (successful),
2. delete contents of LevelCache folder,
3. delete entire Larian Studios folder from my Documents folder,
4. uninstall entire game, delete install folders, reinstall game fresh from Steam.

New game still crashes on attempts to save.

Apologies:

5. I've also tried the remaining suggestions from your original reply - still no joy.

UPDATE: I installed the game on my old rig (specs below) to see if the problem was hardware specific; it is *not* - the same problem cropped up.

Spun up the game, jumped into an old save game, walked around a bit, talked to a few characters, hit the Quicksave button and...FREEZE.

Restarted the game, deleted all old saves, started two new characters/new campaign, jumped into the game, Autosave and...FREEZE.

Reload (the new, autosave) save game, walked around a bit, got into a fight, hit Quicksave and...FREEZE.

Specifications of old rig:

- i7 4790k
- 2x8GBs GSkill DDR3 2100
- nVidia GTX980/8GBs (390.65 drivers)
- Samsung 850 Pro, 1TB
- Windows 10x64 Pro

All current, official, WHQL drivers;
No overclocking/overvolting.

Any ideas?

P.S.

I tried both the GOG and Steam versions on this rig, as well.

Hello,

I've got the exact same problem. Played some month ago, try to pick up the game back from a save, and now the game crash (hard, i have to restart) each time I try to save (or quicksave), so the game is unplayable.

I've try every option listed in this topic and some other from other topic (reinstall, delete saves). Nothing is working.

I have run a report from the AnalysisTool.

Thanks !
