Been playing for 4 hours, I'm in fort joy and had big fight with Crocs but 2 of my team died. I have 276 gold, no resurrection scrolls, no skills in thievery so how am I supposed to proceed? running round in circles opening boxes for 10-12 gold isn't going to do it.

There are still quite a few ways to earn gold. You can steal things by engaging npc in conversation and picking things from stealth with another character. Going around Fort Joy like this will give you lots to sell and a decent gear set for one character. I am just going to give you a little spoiler here. You can be stealthy all the way up to the undead barricades in the Marshes beyond the fort without investing a single point into any civic abilities. Hopefully, it will give you enough to stand on your own feet.

Just be a bit patient and allow yourself time to learn how the npc system works.

You can kill some merchants/vendors and take their resurrection scrolls and gold. Be wary if you need those NPC for later quests.

You can also invest in Lucky Charm (Ranger) for some character. This skill now is party-wide, so you only need it on one character. It's a nice way of getting serviceable random loot.

PS - Also bows and specially crossbows are quite satisfying weapons.

The beginning of the game can be relatively challenging on the higher difficulties as long as you're still in the process of learning the mechanics of the game. If nothing else works, try restarting with another party composition. Taking specs like thievery and summoning definitely helps, also basic CC abilities like Fossil Strike, Battle Stomp, Battle Ram etc. Try getting Fortify and Armour of Frost too, or steal these scrolls from merchants.
